This week sees a 4K release of what I consider to be the greatest movie of all time. We also see some independent movies from the left and right wing extremes in the US right now, and how the other side is destroying the country. I was tempted to leave them both out, or to only include the one from the side of the political spectrum I’m on, but those would both leave out the top selling item via Amazon this week.

Comments | A gorgeous movie in 4K? That might be enough to make me buy the player. And the projector. And the audio receiver. And… no, I just don’t have the budget for the upgrade. | ||||||||

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I’ve heard a lot of really good things about Mandy, and I missed it in theaters, so that’s going on my To Watch List.” Blaine says, “if you have 4K capability, you owe it to yourself to get 2001: A Space Odyssey in that format. If you don’t, upgrade the copy of The Princess Bride that you probably already have to the Criterion Collection edition.”
Its hard for me to agree with the adoration of 2001, when I can never make it through it without falling asleep. Of course, same can be said for ST:TMP.
2001 is… probably not for everyone, especially in this Day and Age. But it is still a classic, and one of the best hard science fiction stories of all time.
At the very least, everyone should read the book (;
Also, have you seen the director’s cut of ST:TMP? It’s a lot less “wooo look at the space cloud!!!”
Yes, I read all the books, and yes, at least once in my life I made it through without sleeping. The directors cut is better but its still has a lot of the space clouds. But even with fewer space clouds, it just drags overall.
After Porn Ends 3?!
Oh, after that intro about politics I thought this was going to be the third in a series of movies about how great/horrible the world would be once porn wasn’t being made anymore. Apparently, it’s the third installment of a documentary about porn stars following porn stars. Now I get why it would be popular enough for three of them.
Incubus is not the Esperanto film starring William Shatner. I used to have that on VHS.
You mean this Esperanto film starring William Shatner? I still have it on DVD, and was holding it when I had my photo taken with Mr. Shatner last year.
Awesome! I’d ask if he commented on it, but I doubt there was time if your photos were anything like the ones we had taken.
No comments from him, no. He spent most of the time (about 4 of the 5 seconds) staring at the camera smiling, said “thanks for coming,” and that was almost it. It was when I was on the way out and answered another fan’s question about which DVD I brought that his head snapped in my direction to take another look, but by then the next group was posed and he had to look back at the camera. I got the impression there would have been a short conversation had we gotten the autograph instead of a photo.
I will say that 2001 on Blu-Ray is beautiful. I’m kinda tempted to get the 4K version. I think I need to make some friends who can sit through that with me, though.
I don’t know if I can justify another copy of The Princess Bride. It’s one of my Top 3 Favourites, and I think it’s one of the most perfect movies ever made (and the more I learn about the behinds the scenes stuff, the more I feel that way — speaking of which, I highly recommend Cary Elwes’ diary As You Wish). But I don’t know that I need to buy it again.
Also read the book if you haven’t.
If you like learning about it, the Criterion Collection edition may be the one for you. They aren’t just about the transfer, which is always great, but also about the bonus features. I don’t think I have a single Criterion film where the bonus features are less than double the length of the original film.
I know — but a lot of that stuff is available from other sources and/or is covered elsewhere (a lot of those documentaries end up being three or four people telling the same story). I don’t feel that I need to know *everything* about a movie — I already have enough trivia for my nerdly requirements (;
