Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “John Wick 3 was an excellent continuation of the series, building on the existing structure of the world, while also including some great characterization and strong fight scenes. It also gives Cecep Arif Rahman and Yayan Ruhian (The Raid and The Raid 2) fight and dialog scenes with Keanu to show what they can do, as opposed to the glorified cameo they got in The Force Awakens.” Blaine says, “of those I’ve seen, I’d go with the animated Aladdin. I haven’t seen the new live action version yet, though it’s on the watch list, mainly because I don’t know if it’s even possible to fill the Robin Williams shaped hole in my expectations.”
I’ve seen almost all the Pixar, and I have yet to be disappointed. (Ignoring sequels.)
I saw John Wick, and Cecep Arif Rahman’s and Yayan Ruhian’s appearance was also a highlight for me (because I study Silat, the style they use.) I was also shocked that it ends in such a “Get ready for the next chapter!” way.
Aladdin’s live action version has been watched by everyone in my house but me, so far. They consensus was that Will Smith is not even trying to do a Robin Williams style Genie, and he does a good job of being his own character.
>I don’t know if it’s even possible to fill the Robin Williams shaped hole in my expectations.”
Spoiler: It’s not. The new Aladdin is not a terrible movie. If the original didn’t exist, it would be fine. It is, however, an insult to the classic which is the animated version.
I want someone to make a movie version of Aladdin based on the original story. In fact, I’d kinda like to see a de-Disnified version of a lot of the stuff they’be co-opted.
Kiss Me Kate is a spankin’ good time.
The hardest part of doing the non-Disney versions is convincing parents not to bring their kids and then complain about how inappropriate they are for non-youth audiences.
A Disney “fairy tale” is really Disney taking something in the public domain and twisting it to fit their desires without actually have to deal with an author they’d need to pay.
Just make ’em rated R. Which, in order to be true to the original, they’d kind of have to be. You could also market them, you know, correctly (;
Now I’m not going to say that one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a theatre in recent years is all the horrified parents dragging their kids out of Deadpool, so yeah, there’ll always be some people who don’t listen. But I don’t remember a backlash against that movie.
There was a backlash against Deadpool, motivated by parents who wanted a PG version, and some even lobbied for laws against any superhero films exceeding a PG rating. Their petitions were ignored by Hollywood, but they were still created.
I get what you mean, but few of these stories have “originals” that we can trace. We have a multiplicity of many of these stories, some of which are relatively family-friendly, and some of which are not. Disney in most cases Disnified stories which were already softened versions of existing ones, but it’s difficult to say how many are “original,” if you see what I mean.
Cinderella (for example) has variations/similar stories in ancient Egypt and China, different from the versions we start seeing in Europe in the 1600s, but recognizable.
Of course, don’t get me started on the journey Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has made into a freakin’ Christmas Song.
