Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “My pick of the week this week is the Aces Go Places collection – it’s a group of martial arts comedy films featuring the various members of the Little Fortunes beyond Jackie Chan (particularly Sammo Hung), so if you’d like to see how the rest of Jackie Chan’s colleagues fare, this is what you’re looking for. Godzilla Minus One is a very close second.” Blaine says, “I would go with the 1986 Little Shop of Horrors, either with the director’s cut or in the horror box set.”

  1. I didn’t catch Spider-Man in the theater. Probably need to before Doomsday (not 100% sure, but why not).

I was watching the live action remakes of Disney films (on Disney+ where it costs nothing but time). I stopped after Little Mermaid. They’re just so utterly pointless. Nothing is added. Nothing is interesting. These are classics for a reason. Remaking them to just reset the copyright is dumb and just cheapens the IP.

Heck, the last few Disney originals have been meh (Moana 2, Wish). Pixar’s Hoppers was fun and I haven’t seen Toy Story 5, yet. I wonder how much of this is from Chapek’s tenure or Iger’s return. I’m curious to see what D’Amaro’s stamp will look like.

Little Shop is a classic. Either ending works (the dark ending is the original ending from the first movie and stage play). I think this, Clue, and Get Out are the only movies with multiple endings on equal footing.

    • Some live action remakes do add things, but they generally add deleted scenes that were rightfully deleted in the first place. They are new songs often enough that I wonder if they were produced primarily to quality for the “Best Original Song” Oscar, which they couldn’t do using only songs written for the original.

Also, referring to the “Lion King” remake is “live action” is laughable, yet Disney consistently does it.

      • Yeah, The Lion King being “live action” was pushing the limits of language. I will never forgive the butchery that was “Be Prepared” one the best villain songs in Disney history.

Now, the prequel Mufasa was different. At least it’s a story we hadn’t heard yet. The only downside was it wasn’t all that strong a story.
