Newton?
Hmmm, a show about high tech gadgets given a very small release and improperly tested, and they decided to call it Newton. I’d bet ten bucks one of the writers is a Mac user (if I had ten bucks.)
Oh, and to continue to beat on the dead horse, I’ve been thinking about Firefly. Now, we usually sit around and ask “How can they cancel Firefly but leave Just Shoot Me on the air?” Well, that seemed a little unfair; after all, sitcoms may not be my cup of tea, but some people don’t like sci-fi. It doesn’t seem fair to force them to give up what they obviously deem a good show in their genre for a good show in mine.
However, I also happened to catch an episode of Mutant X yesterday. Can you honestly tell me that it was beating Firefly in the ratings? A well written space western was axed while superheroes fighting Andy Warhol stays? Perhaps we need to focus less on why networks are cancelling genre shows and start ask why they are cancelling certain shows from our genre. If we aim for quality sci-fi above quantity, might we not get a better reputation for TV sci-fi, earning us a bit more leeway when a show gets off to a slow start?
Sorry if this got a little bitter, I’m sleep deprived. And I would like to say to the Mutant X fan(s) that I apologize if I’ve miss judged your show; I haven’t seen enough episodes to truly make an informed opinion. But, dang it, the guy looks like Andy Warhol.

Mutant X is not a network show, it’s syndicated. I don’t know if you noticed what time it was when you watched it, but it was most likely up against infomercials or golf.
Two comments…
1) Mutant X was a piece of garbage, the only thing they had going for it was the occasionally well-filmed fight scene. Let’s face it, it’s Sci-Fi…. for the people who watched Xena, Hercul-cheese, and Andromeda. Unfortunately, lowest common denominator TV proves that people will watch anything.
2)That first one sounds bad. I mean, Bad. Really bad. Especially any title with the letter “X” in the title. (See #1) The ONLY thing I see about Weapon X as a positive thing is that Silvio is behind it. And if you don’t know why that’s a big deal, think of “The Chronicle”. Really well done, great stories, clever, but I (like everyone else) originally said “they’re making a sci-fi show about a TABLOID?!?!!?”. Fortunately it was a fun ride. And speaking of ride, whatever happened to the cast? (especially Grace… rowr…..)

Wasn’t that one of the code names for Wolverine, back in the day? I smells me a lawsuit…

It’s the name of the project that gave him his adamantium. It’s also responsible for the creation of a dozen or so other characters, including some of those in the new Weapon X title that hit the stands last August.

I allways thought that Wolvie was the only weapon X…I figured the other guinea pigs got diferent kewl names. Ah well, the show is gonna suck exactly as much as mutant x, that’s for sure.
And a sci-fi show about a town with cool gadgets? What the hell? Ohhh! the kid next door has a 60gig iPod! Oooh! Aaaah! Yawn and snore…

Originally, there was only him. Then they added more and named the project Weapon X instead of him. I’ve heard that recent Wolverine writers have decided that Wolverine is the only Weapon X. The one that came before him was Weapon IX, and the one that came after was Weapon XI. (Yes, it seems that the X is a roman numeral.) The kind folk at rec.arts.comics.marvel.universe did not enjoy that particular retcon. Most are looking forward to the upcoming relaunch of the title with a new #1 later this year, in the hopes that the current creative team will be replaced.

Well, they could always do an episode where the kids get shrunk down to insect size, get thrown out with the trash, and have to cross the lawn to get home.
Sounds original enough to me. Not like, say, a space-western with fairly good physics and energy use. Seriously, who would ride a horse in the future? You should just be able to beam yourself around via transporter.

Wow, I’m surprised it only took one guy to come up with Newton. I’m sure Joel Silver is REALLY behind it. They’ll probably shoot it all on a set in British Columbia to save money. Seriously, if we don’t rise up and take down this Newton guy, we’re never gonna get the sci-fi shows we want. It’s been almost twenty years since Misfits of Science was on — we’re due for something. Join me in my quest to destroy Newton!
