Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “I don’t have a terribly strong pick this week. I haven’t seen this season of Torchwood yet, the final season of Smallville was as uneven as the first nine, and I don’t know how well Mission: Impossible will age, so there’s nothing I really want to advocate for strongly this week.” Alex says, “Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 has an undeserved bad rap. People came to it expecting it to conclude the made-it-up-as-the-went-along narrative of the OVAs, and instead they got a re-imagining which made for a more cohesive whole, but in the process lacked some of the OVA’s gonzo spirit. I’d definitely reccomend picking it up (and getting the original OVAs as well) and deciding for yourself.”
Re: Smallville and “According to the producers, the nature of the early visual effects guarantees that this will never come out in a complete series Blu-Ray.” I read that as “We’ll wait a few months or a year and then put out a Blu-Ray box set for the ultimate double dip.” – If you look on iTunes, even Season 1 has an HD version available.
I already own 1-9 so I’ll probably pick up season 10 of Smallville regardless. A box set can wait, if I get it at all.
I’ve heard Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is great, and I have no doubts about it since it stars Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine. It’s already at the top of my BB queue. 30 minutes or less looks like it may be good for a laugh or two as well.
Side note: The new Muppets movie is fantastic. Saw it yesterday with the wife and kid.
The HD seasons on iTunes are 720p. 1080p formats are unavailable, which is what WB requires to release a title on Blu-Ray. The actual statement from the producers is that it will only happen if there appears to be enough of a market to do the “Star Trek: The Original Series” bit and go back and recompose all visual effects in the new resolution. I don’t expect that to ever happen for this particular show.
Not sure about that… Something tells me if they saw an opportunity for a money grab, they’d find a way to bundle it up.
While I enjoyed Smallville, I know many others did not, and you are right it isn’t likely to have enough demand to go back and redo the effects.
