DC announced New 52’s Second Wave

DC has announced the new series in its second wave of New 52 titles, due to launch in May 2012. The titles that are ending are Blackhawks, Hawk and Dove, Men of War, Mister Terrific, O.M.A.C. and Static Shock, all of which end with issue #8 in April. Details on the new issues and additional commentary follow the break.

Of the six cancelled titles, the only one that upsets me is Mister Terrific. That was significantly better than I had expected from it, and I truly wish it could have lasted longer. That said, I’ll probably try out at least three of the new batch, which are as follows:

  • Batman Incorporated – By Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham. Billed as “concluding” Morrison’s story, but listed as an ongoing, which implies to me that Morrison’s run is finite but the title will continue if sales are strong.
  • Earth 2 – By James Robinson and Nicola Scott. I’m definitely picking the first issue of this one up, following the JSA on a parallel world.
  • Worlds’ Finest – By Paul Levitz, George Perez and Kevin Maguire. This is about the Earth 2 versions of Huntress and Power Girl stuck on the currently seen Earth in the New 52, trying to find a way back home, which probably explains the apostrophe placement in the title. I’ll give this one a shot as well, though when I first heard the title, I was excited by the prospect of a book showcasing teamups between the new Superman and the new Batman. I’d love to see that or a Brave and the Bold title show up at some point.
  • Dial H – By China Mieville and Mateus Santoluco. An updated version of “Dial H For Hero,” which I’ll be checking out.
  • G.I. Combat – A war anthology to replace the two cancelled war titles on the lineup. Includes “The War That Time Forgot” by J.T. Krul and Ariel Olivetti; “The Unknown Soldier” by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Dan Panosian; and “The Haunted Tank” by Joan Arcudi and Scott Kolins.
  • The Ravagers – By Howard Mackie and Ian Churchill, spinning out of “Superboy” and “Teen Titans.”
