Weekly Digital Disc Picks – February 7, 2012

Another somewhat light week for U.S. productions, but anime fans have a lot to look forward to.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Well, this is a week dominated by Bandai Entertainment releases, and we can’t be certain if any of these will be reprinted, or even licensed rescued. Consequently, my pick is Mobile Suit Gundam Part 2, with a side of Akira. Frankly, if you’ve ever wanted to get into Gundam – now is the time to start snatching some of that stuff, as you might not be able to get it in the future.” Blaine says, “none of the titles I’ve seen from this week warrant a particularly strong recommendation.”

Title Available Formats
Action
Hawaii Five O: The First Season
Time Traveler: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Alex: Live action adaptation of the anime film I reviewed around this time last year.
Yakuza Weapon
Alex: So, the premise of this film’s director’s earlier movie, The Machine Girl, was about a High School girl who had her arm cut off by the same villain who killed her parents, having machine guns attached to her arm (and later her leg), so she could go get revenge. This is basically the same thing except with a Yakuza instead of a High School Girl.
Anime
Akira
Alex: I can’t belive I’m writing this – but as Akira was a Bandai release, Akira is going to need to get license rescued. Criterion Collection – are you reading this? Also, I’ve previously reviewed this.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Revolution R2 (Anime Legends)
Gasaraki – The Complete Series
K-ON Complete Collection (Anime Legends)
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 – Season 1 (Anime Legends)
Alex: Reminder, Bandai Entertainment is stopping operations, so the Gundam DVDs coming out this week (along with Code Geass, Tales of the Abyss & K-ON) will likely not get reprinted.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Complete Collection 2 (Anime Legends)

Blaine: I thought about putting this in the romance category, but I can’t bring myself to do it. My only exposure to the franchise was the first movie, and that didn’t feel like romance to me. Instead, it felt like a teenage girl lusted after her stalker.

Blaine: This release clearly has Quentin Tarantino fans in mind more than CSI fans. This season 5 finale is already out on DVD with that season, but Tarantino fans who don’t otherwise watch CSI could well be interested.
