Fire the commercial editor!
Once again, the ads for the show completely underminded the ending of the show. Had they not advertised the show based on the last few seconds, I would have been surprised by the death. (Instead, I knew who it would be in the first few seconds of the episode.) Of course, I would have predicted a different type of death, but still, most of the episode was spent just waiting for the event I knew was coming. It undermined all of the good stuff they had up until that point.

This is the reason I avoid watching ads as much as possible. It’s not just the WB though, every entertainment outlet seems to think that the way to get you to watch a tv show/movie is to give you a complete synopsis of all the best scenes compressed into 30 seconds.

Even worse to me was a few seasons ago when, during the ER episode where young medical student Lucy Knight was killed, the local channel was teasing an interview with the actress (can’t think of her name) and stated straight out that she would talk about the death of her character…Note that this was two commercial breaks before she was actually dead. I found out later that it was pretty common knowledge among followers of the TV scene that she was going to die, but that’s no excuse for just saying it right out WHILE the drama is going on…
At least with Angel, from the ads – I have no idea how much spoiler websites had already revealed – that there was some mystery as to who was going to die. I could have seen either Cordy or Fred getting it – probably an imposter of the former who would turn out to still be in the land of the higher powers, and the latter could have brought Wesley and Gunn back from the brink of killing each other over her.

Hi! I’m new here. I’ve been a big fan of Angel and “the slayer show”.
I have just one question (possibly naive and silly). Even though the two shows are on different networks, is it possible that the “boss” of the Beast on angel, is somehow connected to (if not actually being) the source of Buffy’s problems this year? In other words, the First Evil?

It’s very possible. They’ve had cross-overs before, but the WB stopped that when Buffy moved to UPN. However, we know that Eliza Dushku will be back as Faith on both shows, and that Alyson Hannigan has already filmed a guest spot on Angel. The WB recently announced that it would permit actors from Angel to guest spot on Buffy if and only if this is Buffy‘s last season. Since it looks like this would have been the last season anyway (as Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn’t plan to come back) this could very well happen.

In the brief bit where the Beast was kneeling to offer a meager gift wrought of his bones (ewww) it occured to me, what would the First do with it, it can’t touch anything. So on that slim info, I’ll go on a limb and say it’s not the First.

I think there’s a good chance that Cordelia is the Beast’s boss, or at least being manipulated by him/her/it.
It still hasn’t been explained exactly how she returned from being a higher being.
The first sign of the Beast’s coming was from when Lorne read Cordelia.
The Beast surfacing at Connor’s birthplace may just be a side consequence of it surfacing to Cordelia’s location.
Was it Angel who disabled the safehouse’s security, or Cordelia?
Did the Beast choose the site of sun-blotting ritual because of Connor, or was it Cordelia?
It was Cordelia who talked Angel into relinquishing his soul.
The spell didn’t work.
And that last bit in Calvary was a dead giveaway that something’s up with her.
Perhaps the real Cordy is still in floatyville, and this one’s an imposter. What I don’t get is how Lorne was fooled about Angel’s soul.

I noticed that Lorne only let Angel(us) sing long enough to notice a soul. Lorne spotted a soul, everyone is happy.
And Lorne is pretty easy to fool, he was hoping that the spell would work, the spell did look like it was working, Angel acts like himself, he sings willingly. As soon as he gets the soul vibe, he’s happy.

Even beyond the fact that Lorne isn’t exactly a highly trained warrior against evil is the fact that Cordy isn’t Cordy and probably could have laid some mojo on Lorne – either that, or he’s also been replaced either temporarily or permanently by something bad.

I just assumed that the entire point of the spell was to simulate a soul and fool Lorne so they’d let Angelus out.
