Weekly Digital Disc Picks – March 20, 2012

This is another week of few releases, but good releases.

Title Available Formats
Action
Battle Royale
Alex: The Collectors Edition contains the theatrical release and the Director’s Cut of the original film, along with the 2003 sequel to the long-out-of-print in the US cult-classic film. I do wonder if we’re finally getting this definitive release of the film due to the upcoming theatrical release of “The Hunger Games”. The Regular release only has the Director’s Cut. Oh, and the film’s plot – it’s set in the future, after an societal collapse, where older citizens, fearing that the youth of the country will rebel against their totalitarian measures, sets up the “Battle Royale Survival Program” to keep the young people of the country in line. If students act up, their entire class will be sent to Battle Royale, where they must fight against each other, until only one student is left alive.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “This is a really good week this week for films that I didn’t get a chance to see in theaters, but I really want to see. As a long time fan of The Muppets, and of the John LeCarre’s work (particularly Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), I really want to see The Muppets and Tinker, Tailor. On the other hand, I’d heard a lot about Battle Royale over the past few years, and I finally want to give that film a shot as well.” Blaine says, “I heartily endorse The Muppets, and not just because I did my M.Sc. on the project in the background when Bunson and Beaker are first introduced. I’m also very interested in the lastest Buster Keaton Blu-Ray and the latest seasons of Scarecrow and Mrs. King and Kojak.”
