Blaine: One of the few musicals where it makes sense for the characters to burst into song. That’s only one of the reasons I’d say it’s probably Hollywood’s second greatest musical, behind only The Music Man with Robert Preston.

Blaine: Look up “suspense” in any film studies textbook and two things are guaranteed to be mentioned: this movie and Alfred Hitchcock.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I’m giving a whole-hearted recommendation to the 60th anniversary edition of High Noon.” Blaine says, “I’ve got to go with Singing in the Rain, another gem from 1952. The Academy agrees with Alex, though, given that High Noon had a Best Picture nomination and Singin in the Rain didn’t. (The Greatest Show on Earth won that year.) This was one of the rare years when Best Picture and Best Director were split; Best Director went to John Ford for The Quiet Man, another Best Picture nominee. More details here.”

  1. The “old school Hanna-Barbara series” certainly had Charlie Chan in the uh, somewhat stereotyped tradition of the films (with Keye Luke, former Number One Son from several of the Chan films and Master Po from Kung Fu voicing Mr. Chan), but his large family, who become his “Scooby gang” in this series represent the broad spectrum of typical cartoon children and teens, so it actually was one of the few cartoons of its era to feature non-stereotypical Asian characters, and in large numbers.

(Bonus bit of trivia: Jodie Foster did voice work for this one).

    • They had that awesome shape-shifting Chan Van that was even cooler then the Mystery Machine. And the Chan kids played in a Archies-style teen band. It was probably the *least* offensive Charlie Chan in movie and tv history! 和平

  2. It bugs me a lot that “Operation Condor” is actually “Armour of God 2”. “Armour of God”, by the way, was released in the US as “Operation Condor 2”.

Also much better with the original English dubbing, before Jackie Chan went back and dubbed his own lines.

  3. Though it’s listed under “Fantasy” and not “Musical” the release of Camelot is the film adaptation of the Broadway Musical.

And I will argue that Music Man is hardly Hollywood’s best musical. It’s good (and I’ve done the stage version), but I can’t imagine anyone sitting though “My White Knight” without at least glancing at the Fast Forward button on their remote. And, apparently, the AFI agrees with me.
