Angel Discussion – “Release” (new)

It’s another new episode. Need a reason to watch it? How about this one: Faith is still here.

  1. Congratulations Andy Hallett!

Andy Hallett is now in the opening credits. It’s about time!

This episode wasn’t quite as fun as last week’s, but they’re definitely taking Angelus in directions we didn’t see when he showed up on Buffy.

Finally, they’ve got another wonderful cliffhanger.

Yup, hanging off a cliff indeed.

      SPOILER below (kinda)

And Wes is definatly the new poster boy for BadBoy Magazine. What is it with Mutant Enemy shows and torture scenes?

I don’t remember Angelus ever having quite that much a sense of humor, and boy does he like to talk ! He never shuts up, in fact. Reminds me of some classic Marvel Comics superheroes, like Spidey.

I hope they don’t let Faith go where I think they’re taking her with this latest hanger…

  2. Talkative Angelus
Perhaps Angelus is talkative now because this time around he’s got someone who’s always listening. (I think I missed an episode: who is in his head? The Master? The First?)

While I can’t blame Angelus for biting Faith’s neck (how could he resist?), it does cast in a dark light my notion of having Faith succeed Buffy (as was intended by fate).

Of course, this show has been known to throw twists…

Excellent episode. The whole Cordy thing creeps me out. “I know who you are. You’re a daddy. And daddy’s have responsibilities.” Brrrr.

The characters don’t yet know who it is. That’s why they tend to refer to it as “the thing that gave orders to the Beast.” The viewers are the only ones who know that it’s Cordelia, or possibly the thing that looks like Cordelia. It might also be the thing growing in Cordelia, but I hope not. It would be a retread of Expecting from the first season, for one thing. It would also eliminate the potential way around the out-of-character behaviour she had during the rain of fire. If that wasn’t Cordelia, but instead something that looked like her that knows exactly what kind of child would be produced in a union with Connor, then it makes much more sense.

      • Re: Talkative Angelus
Assuming it really is Conner’s spawn, then it can’t be the Big Bad(TM) since The Beast was doing his thing before they copulated, and since it was made clear that he’s not bright enough to do evil that big on his own without having been given the word.

I would expect that the real Cordelia will make an appearance (either descending for real this time or getting in touch with the gang somehow) before the season ends.

Oh yeah, and did anyone else get a little hot watching the preview of next week’s episode? A Willow appearance, especially if she’s coming on strong, lights my fire big-time.

Alexius would probably chime in to agree with this, but he’s still unable to form coherent sentences.

I see the Cordy possibility as several alternatives, not all of which can be true.

          – It’s something that looks like Cordy, and the real Cordy’s stuck on a higher plane or somewhere unpleasant
          – Cordy went evil (unlikely)
          – It’s something that possessed Cordy between her being on a higher plane and her arriving back on this plane

I can’t wait to find out what it really is! And I just love those white contact lenses.

And Willow’s going to be in it? Woo! Excellent! Although I’m not quite sure how that reconciles with Buffy…

I would be much more excited about next week’s Willow appearance, if it wasn’t painfully stupid of them not to have called her in the first place when they were doing the desouling/resouling of Angel.

I mean, Willow is the only one of them (and the only person they know of, period) to have even attempted a resouling spell, let alone actually to have succeeded. Shouldn’t a part of their original plan have been to at least call her to find out what spell she used and then to be ready with that spell when they wanted to resoul Angel? Monumentally stupid on Wesley’s part, but even more monumentally stupid on Cordelia’s, since she helped Willow with the resouling spell back in Buffy, Season 2! (Of course, if Cordelia has been evil all along, as I suspect, then it’s all Wesley’s fault, and I have no problem assigning blame to that twit!)

That little blunder is, for me, probably the only thing that mars this current storyline, which I’m finding otherwise quite good. Mmm, Faith…

And I recall Angelus as being quite talkative in his original Buffy appearances. That’s one way you know he’s evil: the guy never shuts up! :)

Although obviously stupid, most likely the networks didn’t have the deal in place for cross-casting when the unsouling/resouling episodes were shot. This whole deal depended on Buffy being on its last season, which wasn’t official until a little bit ago. Blame network politics.

But they didn’t need an actual physical appearance by Alyson Hannigan. How about a scene with Lorne or Wesley talking to her on the phone to get the details on the spell? We wouldn’t even have to hear her voice. Or, since Willow originally got the spell from a computer file that Jenny Calendar had done, how about getting it by email? Or, heck, even a line about “we got this spell from Willow, since she’s done it before” would have been nice. Some mention at least to allay my suspicions that the crew at Angel Investigations collectively have zero brains.

But bringing Willow in next week smacks too much of “Oops, we are idiots. Why didn’t we think of this three weeks ago?” With people like this trying to stop the apocalypse, we’d all better kiss our asses goodbye!

I can suspend my disbelief with the best of ’em, but some things are just way too hard to ignore.

You’re right, it would’ve been nice but I don’t think that it was essential. It wouldn’t of advanced the plot, it was not necessary for the dynamic of the individuals involved and viewers who just started watching would’ve been thoroughly confused on who this Willow chick was. Since we don’t follow every second of these people’s lives just imagine that it happened offscreen.

It’s also possible that this Cordelia remembered the spell well enough to know that it depended greatly on having an orb they didn’t actually have.

They did briefly mention the spell, I can’t remember what Fred said but it was something about it being impossible for them to do – probably because an orb of Thessilou is kind of hard to get hold of in a city of eternal night? It was either the requirement for the orb or the difficulty of the spell that put them off. Besides, if Angel’s soul is stuck in a jar, would it even work? It was designed for use when his soul was floating around in nowhere-land, after all. Not when it’s in a jar in EvilCordy’s bedroom.

                    • Re: Talkative Angelus
It was indeed the fact that the soul is in the magic jar that stopped them from doing the “standard” (ouch) curse. Your last two sentences give the essence of what Freddy said. :)
