Synopsis

Sam, Dean, Kevin, and Kevin’s Mom go to a supernatural auction to buy back the Word of God. Double dealing and plot twists ensue. More of the back story of Dean and Castiel in Purgatory is revealed.

High Point

The supernatural auction with gods and demons present was an excellent stage for very interesting things to happen. My personal favourite was watching Sam wield Thor’s Hammer. For a moment the comic book geek in me was hoped he would be posessed with the spirit of Thor…

Low Point

Considering the stakes and previous similar situations, the rescue of Kevin’s mom was just too easy, and felt contrived.

The Review

The supernatural auction felt fresh and original. We were left guessing as to what would happen, and why. All the cool stuff that was auctioned, and the currency (such as 5/8ths of a virgin in a bloody paper bag) was most entertaining. The humourous elements also felt quite original. We give it a 6/6.

While not overwhelming, the effects were entirely appropriate and kept our suspension of disbelief in check. Thor’s Hammer was my personal favourite. We give it a 5/6.

We loved the story. It had plot twists, a curious side story, a devoted and self-sacrificing mom, tragedy, betrayal, revelations of back-story, and a lot of insight into the background of the Supernatural pantheon. We give it a 6/6.

The acting as usual was excellent. A pleasant surprise was Lauren Tom’s portrayal of Kevin’s mom, she did great. I hope we see more of her. Another surprise star performance was Alex Diakun as the creepy old man who carried the bloody bag containing 5/8ths of a virgin. It was an excellent role done very well. We give the acting a 6/6 because the leads and the guests did a superb performance.

The show kept us involved from beginning to end, and the motherly sacrifice felt natural and gripping. The foreshadowing of what Dean had to do to escape purgatory raised the tension well. The auction had a great flavour of creepy, arcane, mysterious and funny that is what makes a great episode of Supernatural. We give it a 5/6.

Classic and consistent Supernatural production value. 6/6.

Overall, we liked this episode. It’s good to see the show getting into the swing of things. We were left satisfied and eager for the next. 6/6.

We give this episode a 40/42.

  1. I haven’t followed this show regularly, but we’ve needed regular reviews. Anyone else have something they’d like to review, that we’re not getting to?
