Greatest Science Fiction Film Tournament Week 14: Round 1

Our fourteenth round of voting is here. Also, we have some new options starting this week; continue reading for details.

Starting this week, we are accepting votes for wildcard spots in the tournament. There will be 8 wild card spaces available. Instead of winnowing the 384 title list down to 128, we’ll narrow that down to 120 instead. Each of the 8 weeks in round 2 will include a wild card entry in the final tournament. The complete list of eligible films can be found here. If you don’t see a title that you feel belongs, e-mail me. The 8 most common submissions will take the wild card spots.

There are two titles that have been added to the tentative title list. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and La Antena (2007) did not receive sufficient votes to be judged properly.

The following titles have now been eliminated from the tournament:

  1. This weeks poll should have had 2 entries for “I am Legend”.

    The movie that ended up in theaters was Average.

    The DVD with the alternate ending was exceptional.

    The studios listened to their focus groups who were too easily confused by the fantastic alternate ending and neutered the movie.

    Its ironic that the studios are fretting over how to make a sequel to this movie after killing off the main character when if they’d have had the balls to go with the alternate ending that wouldn’t be a problem.

    • A note on the “multiple versions” thing: we decided not to distinguish between them in voting, although I’ll be watching every version I have access to when preparing the podcasts. Thus, Blade Runner will only appear once in the tournament, although five different cuts will be viewed before I record any podcasts about them. (I’ll also watch any and all bonus features on my copies. I’m spending virtually all of this weekend doing nothing but “researching” Superman: The Movie (1978) for June’s podcast, in fact.)

  3. I’m a bit confused about how to vote for wilcard films. The link you give above is a Google Document that appears to contains every single film in the contest, not a wildcard list. And you said that you’re accepting votes starting this week, but how do I vote?
