Greatest Science Fiction Film Tournament Week 24: Round 1

Our twenty fourth round of voting is here. This is the final qualifying round. Week 25 starts on April 19, when we start the head-to-head voting and elimination process with the top 120 titles from the past 24 weeks along with 8 wildcard titles. The promised opportunity to revote on 2012 releases is here, and the opportunity to vote on the “tentative” titles is here.

The tentative titles from week 23 are as follows:

  • Dead Leaves (2004)
  • Scorpio One (1998)
  • The Man From Planet X (1951)
  • Omer the Tourist in Star Trek (1973)
  • Testament (1983)

The newly eliminated titles are

  • 2046 (2004)
  • A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001)
  • The Bugs Bunny/Road-Runner Movie (1979)
  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)
  • Fantastic Planet (1973)
  • The Fly (1958)
  • Innerspace (1987)
  • The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976)
  • Solaris (1972)
  • X2: X-Men United (2003)

There is one other title that looks to be eliminated at this point, but it was a 2012 release, so I won’t announce it yet in case it climbs the ranks again. If it drops, previously eliminated titles may also find themselves back in the running. The same goes for the tentative titles. In short, titles closest to the 120 rank cutoff may suddenly return or be removed in this week.

  1. Awww. Bugs Bunny/Road Runner is out :-(

I was wondering how that actually got in a poll for Sci-Fi movies. Although I did vote Above Average for it.

    • The items on this list were compiled from the first few hits through Google. There are a few titles I wouldn’t have included if it was up to me, but this was about letting our readers decide.

  2. Note that for the two “revote” polls, the order of the options is reversed. “Below Average” comes first in the list, instead of “Above Average”.

    • Same here, although I had at least heard of one two of them. If that’s typical I don’t seem all that many of them (or any, really) making it through to the next round…

Good spot on the the reversed order of options too – I think I was on my third vote before I noticed, but in my defence I’d not had my morning coffee yet. :/
