Peter Jackson’s Next Project

For those of you unable to sleep, wondering what Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) will do next: Worry no more. According to this piece from SciFi.com he’ll be helming a remake of the 1933 classic King Kong. Jackson will also have a hand in writing the script which will include more action taking place on Skull Island.

The film has been remade once before, in 1976, and starred Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, and Jessica Lange.

  1. Oh yeah
Well, what is King Kong gonna climb now? Back to the Empire State Building or what?

  2. Do we really need ANOTHER remake?
The original King-Kong was very good. The remake was very good. Do we really need yet another remake of this movie? Is there some important angle that Peter can bring to the movie the third time around that the first two missed?

After King-Kong perhaps he’d like to remake Planet Of The Apes. At least in that case the second version sucked so much the third version would have to be an improvement, although it would be hard to imaging a remake that could improve on the original in any area besides special-effects.

Hey, how about Hollywood declares 2004 “King-Kong remake year” and ONLY releases remakes of King Kong. Twenty or thirty versions of King Kong. I’d like to see Wood Allen’s angst-ridden ape, and Tim Burton’s darkly oddball monkey. Roman Polanski’s version would have the big furball fall for a 13 year old Ann Darrow. Jim Carrey could play King Kong through facial contortions alone without makeup. What a great trend Peter Jackson has started! Viva La-Kong!

      CGI Kong, duh.

      Two words: Naked Nova.
’cause in the dialogue they seem surprised that Taylor is wearing rags as clothes, and yet all the humans wear rags (censorship).

This is the guy who did LOTR and Heavenly Creatures, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, and I’ll skip entirely my review of the (I thought) lame remake– but why remake King Kong? The original is so entirely a creation of the early twentieth-century* that it should be left there.

And Jackson’s films have shown considerable imagination. Why not come up with an entirely new addition to our list of iconic monsters?

*the gee-whiz sense of adventure, the impossible lost island of oversized dinosaurs that wandered off a nineteenth-century natural history painting (I especially enjoy the carnivorous brontosaur), the blonde along for the ride, the ape’s lust for said blonde, the fact that the island’s inhabitants had “fallen” to their current technological level, the unabashed un-pc exotification of “foreign” cultures, the oversized ape among the newly-oversized buildings of Depression-era NYC, et cetera

  3. I’m probably an idiot
Ok, I recognize that the Sci-Fi was posted yesterday, but is anyone else wondering if this was a poorly timed April Fools prank. I’m just having a hard time imagining Peter Jackson going from making the Lord of the Rings to making a remake of a monkey movie (granted, the best monkey movie that didn’t have Roddy McDowall, but still a Monkey Movie).

    Maybe it’s just wishful thinking.

He started planning it before he made LOTR. You can find a fair amount about his version in the archives of Ain’t It Cool News, assuming you know of some secret trick that makes their search engine produce the results you were looking for.

      • the final statement of this post is I’m certain one of the oddest I’ve ever made.
The script I’ve linked to above is allegedly Jackson’s original remake script, pre-dating LOTR.

This link tells a little about the pre-history of the Jackson Kong.
