Singer has made a deal with Studios USA to reinvent Battlestar Galactica and executive produce it with Tom DeSanto, and he’ll direct the pilot if it doesn’t clash with the “X-Men 2” shooting schedule.
All I can say is “Yea!” and I hope they keep the old music.

I hope they can do it right… The current crop of sci-fi have not been able to capture “epic” stories at all. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but even shows like Independence Day didn’t have an epic feel to them. It was more like a “wham-bam-thankyoumam” pace to it… If you look at the old Battlestar Galactica, they were able to capture the essence and the feel of a fallen, burning empire, and refugees fleeing. That scene where Adama returned to the surface, watched his planet burning, and was chased away by the doomed people who were left behind… It left a lump in your throat. What do we have in Independence Day? White House blowing up. (yay.) Will Smith punching out a slimy alien? These days films are big on hype, special effects, and all the adolescent catch-phrases that will suck in the teens who want to watch cool stuff. Not saying thats bad! But there is more to good movies… It seems sci-fi movies aren’t treated the same way as other quality movies anymore. Battlestar Galactica had a similar feel to non-sci fi movies such as Ben Hur, or any of the old biblical movie adaptations… (Moses, anyone?) Sure, it got bad in the end, but it was a good idea! I sure hope todays movie directors don’t mess it up and make a wisecracking black guy the centre of the movie. (nothing against will smith, but not all films are about inflating the egos of the actors.)
Bryan Singer’s track record
This one could be at either end of the spectrum. On the one hand, Singer made “The Usual Suspects,” which is one of my favourite movies. That one wasn’t appealing to the lowest common denominator.
On the other hand, he made “X-Men.” While that’s a great popcorn flick, it doesn’t exactly stimulate the intellect. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
