Pick your TV podcasts

As previously announced, the Bureau will have regular audio podcast content coming in 2013, and running for several years. The movie podcasts (monthly “Silver Screen Superman” in 2013, “Big Screen Batman” in 2014, and discussion of high ranking titles from the ongoing Greatest Science Fiction Film tournament) are fairly well mapped out. It looks like the originally announced schedule for the X-Files retrospective podcast may have been more conservative than necessary, so I’m opening the floor for opinions from our readers/listeners. More after the break.

The originally announced schedule for the X-Files retrospective podcast was biweekly starting on September 10, 2013. The start date isn’t changing, as that is the 20th anniversary of the first broadcast of the series. However, in the past 10 weeks I’ve recorded 14 podcasts, typically recording two per weekend, and I haven’t even hit the seasons I’m most passionate about. At that rate, we can do much better than biweekly.

Here is the question for our readers/listeners: what do you want us to do about the schedule like this? The options I see are as follows, but we are open to suggestions.

  1. Step up to a weekly release cycle on the X-Files podcast.
  2. Leave things exactly as announced and just use the buffer time to ensure that we never miss a scheduled podcast. (That seems doubtful as it is, with a year’s lead time and this kind of output.)
  3. Keep the X-Files biweekly and step up the movie podcast schedules to fill in the alternate weeks.
  4. Do a second TV podcast about a series I’m familiar with and have complete access to. Options here include
    • Firefly
    • Adventures of Superman (starring George Reeves)
    • American Gothic
    • Angel
    • Buffy
    • Babylon 5 (though I’m sure you could find other podcasts that do that one better than I could)
    • Batman: The Animated Series
    • Birds of Prey
    • Chuck
    • Doctor Who (2005 on)
    • Justice League/Justice League Unlimited
    • Quantum Leap
    • Red Dwarf
    • Robotech
    • Smallville (though this would have significant overlap with my reviews)
    • Spider-Man (the 1967 series)
    • most incarnations of Star Trek (though I’d shy away from that one simply because the Mission Log Podcast people are doing a fantastic job and I couldn’t touch their work)
    • Superman: The Animated Series
    • Supernatural (which I’d shy away from simply because the series is ongoing)
    • The Tick: Live Action Series
  5. Do a second TV podcast of a “discovery” format, in which I watch a series I haven’t watched at all, or haven’t seen in its entirety, or just haven’t watched since childhood and only vaguely remember. This could include
    • 3rd Rock from the Sun
    • Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
    • Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin
    • Aeon Flux
    • Animaniacs
    • Astro Boy (1980)
    • Batman Beyond
    • Battlestar Galactica (1978) / Galactica 1980
    • Battlestar Galactica (2004); I fell behind after season two
    • Bionic Woman (2007)
    • Captain N
    • Captain N and the New Super Mario World
    • Charmed
    • Dark Angel
    • Dead Like Me
    • Death Note
    • Doctor Who (1963) – random stories
    • Dollhouse
    • Animated Fantastic Four (1994 and 2006)
    • Farscape (I’ve only seen the first two seasons)
    • Final Fantasy Unlimited
    • Flash: The Complete Series
    • Futurama
    • Get Smart (1965)
    • The Greatest American Hero
    • Harsh Realm
    • He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
    • Hero High
    • Heroes (I’ve only seen the first two seasons)
    • Human Target
    • Incredible Hulk
    • Land of the Giants
    • Land of the Lost
    • Legend of Zelda
    • Lexx: The Dark Zone
    • Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
    • Lost (I’ve only seen season one, and I think there’s another podcast out there already)
    • MacGyver
    • Mission: Impossible (1966)
    • My Own Worst Enemy
    • My Pet Monster
    • New Adventures of Batman
    • New Adventures of Superman
    • The Outer Limits (both incarnations)
    • The Prisoner (1967)
    • Pushing Daisies
    • Reaper
    • Reboot
    • Rocket Robin Hood
    • Ruby-Spears Superman
    • Sarah Jane Adventures
    • Stargate (complete franchise; I’m up to early season four of SG1, but have all of SG1, Atlantis and Universe)
    • Sliders
    • Slings and Arrows
    • Space: Above and Beyond
    • Spectacular Spider-Man
    • Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (1999)
    • Super Friends (most incarnations)
    • Super Mario Bros. Super Show
    • Torchwood
    • Trigun
    • Twilight Zone (1959 and 2002 incarnations; again I hesitate due to an existing podcast)
    • Twin Peaks
    • V (all incarnations)
    • Wonder Woman (1976); I’ve only seen the first two seasons
    • X-Men (1992)
    • X-Men: Evolutions
  6. Some other reader suggestion, including a combination of the above.

I’m currently leaning towards doing a combination of discovery and review podcasts with short run series, but I want to open up the floor to our readers and potential listeners to see what you are interested in hearing.

  1. X-Files is already a go.
The high-ranking movies from our tournament, but surely, a few podcasts on the worst films in the tournament.

Whole series aren’t necessary in every case. There’s so much material here (Teddy Ruxpin?), why not focus on favorite, most interest, best, worst, most whatever eps of various shows?

  2. Podcasts on every single episode of “Doctor Who,” done weekly, on a schedule that should take you to mid-June, 2057, by which point we can pick up the adventures of the 35th Doctor.
