Stargate SG-1 Season Premiere on SciFi Channel

pythor
writes, Stargate doesn’t seem to get a lot of play here at
b42, but it’s a decent show. Got the story arc, and enough humor
thrown in to be interesting. Anyway, the 2 hour Season 7
premiere was tonight, Jun 13.
I like what I’ve seen of the
show, but I tend to forget discussion forums for Sci-Fi channel
shows since I don’t get them. I’ll try to remember to do them
each Friday for this one.

  1. Season three on DVD
It’s probably worth mentioning that the third season of the show hits DVD on
Tuesday, June 17. (I can’t afford it, so I won’t be reviewing it as I have the first
    two seasons.)

  2. Homages and in jokes (spoilers if you haven’t seen it)
I loved the blatant Star Wars and ID4 ripo…er Homages ;-) I was expecting Anubis’ super weapon to blow up the city with a vertical pillar of white light ;-)

The by-play between Daniel and Jonas that seemed more aimed at the real world than the Stargate world was fun too. I do hope that Jonas remains at least a recurring character…

My only problem was a pet-peeve at the beginning of the show: Daniel Jackson is laying there unconscious, yet in this perfectly positioned “oh my let me cover up” pose. It’s not like with the long shot they used we’d have seen anything anyhow, or that we’d see anything that hasn’t been seen in any number of other shows on TV.

Yeah the Starwars bits were copied right down to the dialog! The ID4 image of the mothership over the city was a direct copy too! Well done though. Daniel was lying in the fetal position, considering he was sort of reborn that’s understandable, modesty might not have had anything to do with it.

I’ve missed out on a whole season or more from the time the show left showtime till now. I have some catching up to do, nice that scifi is also doing re-runs.

Considering the original Stargate movie was done by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich – the same folks who gave us ID4 – I think you can excuse most anything in SG-1 that’s stolen from that movie. :)

Oh yes, and I’m extremely glad we’re back on for more episodes now. I’ll be picking up season 3, partly to watch the episodes again (I watched every rerun on SciFi to catch up since in the past I only had Showtime off and on) and partly because when I gave my grandmother the first two DVD box sets she watched them all in about a week so I’m guessing she’ll get a kick out of seeing another set of episodes. It’s the kind of thing she’d never buy herself (she’s “frugal”) so I’ve gotta keep feeding them to her.

  3. Just saw it
Well I just saw it (all praise BitTorrent) and I loved it! Good arc progression, although if the entire season runs at that pace I’m going to die of confusion I think, trying to keep everything straight. You can see the effects of Richard Dean Anderson’s reduced shooting schedule, but it was on the whole beneficial to see the characters split over different locations, working independently towards the same goals instead of always as a single team in the same place as has been so typical of the previous seasons. I hope we see more of that.

Amanda Tapping’s hair is nice too :-)

Which reminds me, I have four more season DVD box sets to get before season six comes out… better get a job I think! It does appear to be the sole advantage of being a Stargate fan in the UK though!

Forget her hair. In the one-hour behind-the-scenes special before the season 7 opener (I can’t remember what they called it), we got to not only see her being pretty darned funny out of character…we got to see her belly button ring – definitely not military issue but a nice accent to the total package, nonetheless. :) :)

        Ooooh!

  4. Daniel/Jonas
I also want to keep seeing Jonas. Not that I don’t miss Daniel but now I miss Jonas. He and Teal’C had their own little “Alien bonding thing” going. He was even starting to understand O’Neil!!! If you can understand what O’Neil is saying then you deserve to stay.

On top of that, Jonas and Daniel worked well together as characters. If Jonas had stayed around, they could have argued over the the office, over chairs in the briefing room, etc.

Okay, I’ll stop talking… for now.
