Movie Review – “The Hulk”

Hulk smash puny competition!

Premise

Dr. Bruce Banner, pelted by gamma rays, turns into the
Hulk.

Cast, Crew, and Other Info

Complete cast and crew listings are available from the
IMDB
. They no
longer list Brooke Langton (as they did when I reviewed
the
novelization) which makes sense, as I didn’t see her
anywhere.

The cast did include Eric Bana as Bruce Banner, Jennifer
Connelly as
Betty Ross, Sam Elloit as General “Thunderbolt” Ross,
Josh Lucas as
Glen Talbot, and Nick Nolte as Dr. David Banner.

It was directed by Ang Lee, written by James Schmaus,
and had a
musical score by Danny Elfman.

High Point

Nick Nolte, through the first two acts of the story.

Low Point

Nick Nolte’s character in the final act of the story.

The Scores

The originality suffers a bit because it’s such a
great
adaptation. It’s new to the big screen, but we’ve seen
much of this
on the small screen, and on the comic book page. I do
have to give
them credit for revamping his origin in a manner than not
only updates
it for today’s science, but actually brings a much more
personal touch
to the villain of the piece. I give it 4 out of 6.

The effects were mixed. Things the Hulk
interacted with,
like water and foam, were often unconvincing. The Hulk
himself
suffered only because of the unnatural skin tone, which
was chosen to
match the comic book character. The interaction of the
Hulk with
human elements, and the facial expressions it was
capable of, were
both excellent. I give the effects 4 out of 6.

The story was a trimmed version of what was
in the
novelization, and the movie benifits from it. (If people
complain
about the pacing now, they should see what could have
been filmed.)
The only real complaint I had was the poor explanation of
the ending.
If I hadn’t read the novelization, I wouldn’t have known
what was
going on, and that’s not a good thing. I give it 4 out of 6.

The acting from most of the players was good.
Eric Bana
wasn’t very animated, but that was his character. Nick
Nolte did an
excellent job, playing a psychotic disturbingly well. I give it
5 out
of 6.

The emotional response this produced was
fair. The neat
visual devices were sometimes distracting in important
scenes, but it
was still great to see the Hulk on screen throwing tanks
around and
such. The interactions between Hulk and Talbot were
particularly
satisfying. I give it 4 out of 6.

The production was excellent. Trust Ang Lee
to make a
gorgeous film. Danny Elfman’s score was a Danny Elfman
score. The
only detriment that really stood out was that the
comic-panel type
shots, which reminded me of split-screens in light
comedies, didn’t
seem serious enough to match some of the scenes they
were used in. It
was a real problem at some points. I give it 4 out of 6.

Overall, it’s a good comic book movie, which
is better than
we might have expected given some of the information
that was leaked
out of context early in the production. I give it 4 out of 6.

In total, The Hulk receives 29 out of 42.

  1. I rather enjoyed it
It was a fun movie, and I agree with the high and low points – I really wasn’t impressed with Nolte in the last scene with the two chairs (one of my friends who also saw it described it as “Shakespeare meets Comics, and not in a good way”).

The only other thing that annoyed me was the fast-and-loose Molecular Biology they were pulling in the beginning. They showed a PCR gel being run (that thing with the dark bands moving across it), and they allowed the DNA fragments to run right off the end – not useful when you use a standard line graph of distances traveled at a set voltage versus the measurements taken to find the size of the pieces. Then again, I doubt any Molecular Biology shown in movies will ever be up to my exacting standards (I’m assuming the same goes for the rest of you with science degrees when you see the ‘popular’ view of your work, pretty aggravating isn’t it?).

Also, how great was the Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno cameo at the beginning?

Physicists don’t tend to annoy me too much. They just say a few physics-ish things and everybody turns off so writers usually don’t try to get to nitty-gritty with the physics.

But I do have to argue with the review of the movie. It lost points because the Hulk was green. I appologize if this sounds harsh or rude, but that is the whole point.

I know that the Hulk was originally gray and changed for technical reasons, and that it was gray later on, but the Hulk we all know and love, the cultural icon is green. When I was four or five, I visited my grandfather’s fire station. I only remeber one truck that was there. It was lime green, with an Incredible Hulk license plate frame.

What I’m saying is I don’t think it is fair to take away props for something like this. The special effects review is to gauge the SFX crew’s success or failure at creating the neccessary imagery. In this case that happens to be a 1000lbs. green guy who can bench press about 100 tons.

Again, I’m mean no offense. And I’m also sorry for my spelling. I’m in a hurry.

Okay, I’ll stop talking… for now.

I should have been more clear; it lost points because it was neon
green. There are shades of green that look like greens that appear in
nature. The bright green they chose wasn’t one of them. I know it’s
subjective, but that’s the way I felt.

Like I said in another post, they took steps to provide an explanation for
his bright green colour in the intro credits’ little science montage. And
can you imagine the amount of ranting we would be going through if he
            hadn’t been green?

            • Re: I rather enjoyed it
And what level of green would the original complainer desire? If not the comic book, then what? Had it been anything else, people would have complained, “Ick! That’s an ugly, dull green. Why isn’t he more colorful?”

And yes, the gray one would have been a disaster.

              • Re: I rather enjoyed it

A dark, reptilian green would have worked well enough. Most of the
effects points lost were for the poor looking water and foam effects, by
                the way.

Gotta admit, a nice reptillian green, now that you mention it…

                  But I didn’t notice the water/foam deal…eh.

And I subjectively feel that you should have paid more attention in the
intro sequence when his dad is messing around with jellyfish and he
writes down something about its genetic ability to produce a neon green

      That Was My ‘High Point’.

    • Re: I rather enjoyed it

I’ll see your molecular biology and raise you a computer science… In one of those “look, we have computers!” montages, there was a bunch of C++ source code on the screen, that for all the world looks like the code to a linked list. It’s a useful enough thing, but damn near trivial to implement, and as such isn’t worthy of screen time.

And it’s always so abused. Movies like “The Net” and “Swordfish” just run fast and loose with current computing jargon and don’t bother to figure out what it really means. And then you get speculative sci-fi like Terminator where they just go crazy abusing strong AI terminology for their own use.

At least in Matrix:Reloaded, when Trinity hacks a computer she uses a known SSH exploit…

True that, but I think I still have you beat – the David Banner scene (I can’t remember if it was the young version or the old version) where he was copying down random A’s, T’s, G’s and C’s (Nitrogenous base short forms – Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine – which are a third of each nucleotide of DNA) from a genetic sequence. It looked good, except you need three of the letters in a row to form a codon (simply put, a sequence that codes for an amino acid which, when combined with the rest of the amino acids produced by the other codons in a gene makes a protein). What he was doing is akin to leafing through an advanced text book and copying down a random word every few pages.

At least your example could have worked – all they were doing with the Molecular Biology was random gibberish.

  2. The Hulk SUCK
at first i thought that this movie are GOOD but after i watch over it, it have MANY SUCK THING!
like the animation is not good enough to be release on big screen . and i get dizzy coz to many “Transition” on the screen!!!!
its the WORST super heroes movie
i’d like to collect Super Heroes movies but this movie are defenetly not on my colections!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kinda like your grammar & use of the english language?

  3. CGI
I was dragged to this movie — the story isn’t one that really interests me, and the previews indicated that the special effects were going to be really bad.

Imagine my surprise then, that two of the three points I liked best about the movie (the third being from Nick Nolte) were CGI: the Jurassic Park water spot (nothing technically challenging these days, but amusing) and the detail on the tanks when the Hulk was ripping them apart — especially when he pulled the turret off one, and broken bushings fell off. But the Hulk himself, while better than I expected in detail, lived down to my expectations in movement — bounding around like an inertia-less rabbit.

The story was better than I expected too — there’s some depth there finding out his past, but I still think it could have been stronger.

So, while it exceeded my admittedly low expectations, I’m not planning on seeing it again or recommending it to anyone.

As I Put It To Everyone Who Asked:
If You’re Not A Fan Of The Hulk, This Movie Won’t Make You Into One.

Also: Can Anyone Who Read The Novelization Explain The Ending? I Thought I Got It, But Wasn’t Sure…

Also: Can Anyone Who Read The Novelization Explain The Ending? I

The Absorbing Man tried to absorb Hulk’s energy, but it was too much
for him, and he got fried. (They both feed energy out of their
environments; Hulk turns it into mass.)

        • Re: Absorbine Man Jr.?

So Betty’s comment about “[both of them] absorbing ambient energy” actually does make sense if you’ve read the novelization? Pity they didn’t put in the reasons for it into the film itself, so that all of the audience could get it!

To be fair, I did enjoy the film, and I was able to look past all the techno-babble and bizarre alterations to the story to appreciate the story that Ang Lee decided to tell using the cast of the old Hulk comic books.

    • Re: Inertialess Rabbit

My personal Low for the CGI was the complete lack of impact damage when the Hulk fell to earth. There’s actually 2 or 3 good paragraphs about the incedental damage done by the Hulk jumps around, but none at all in the movie.

Go see it again. There isn’t allways damage, but he cracks a rock here
and there while jumping around. I particularly liked the bit when he
        lands on a small
rock “island” and there’s a ripple moving outwards from it in the water.

        • Re: Inertialess Rabbit
Actually, I thought that was one of the best things. He lands and bounces a step. He lands on sand and slides and tumbles. A bomb lands nearby and he flops along the ground. What more do you want?

Rock is pretty hard, I wouldn’t expect his padded feet to shatter it when he was just jumping. The only stupid jump was the initial one off the roof. He does weigh a thousand pounds (at that point.)

More bothersome were some of the lack of inertial reaction in some of the indoor scenes. You move those arms rapidly, the rest of the body recoils the other way. Some of it just looked bad. But only inside, and only occasionally when thrashing.

          • Re: Inertialess Rabbit

If you haven’t seen the SciFi Channel’s(?) making of The Hulk, “Hulk: The Lowdown” then you might not know that Hulk’s movement was created(modeled?) through motion capture, with Ang Lee as the actor!

So I’m not sure how unrealistic you thought it was. I had no problem with his motion in that sense…

Odds that The Hulk will even be remembered in 5 years: practically nil.

Too many of you yung’uns are spoiled about things like this. I was sh**ting bricks when I saw this — and that was on TV.

I thought “Psycho” was stupid when younger, but I was jaded by all that came after and had never seen it “fresh”.

There are three good terror movies as far as I am concerned: Psycho, Alien, and Holloween (the original one only)

Not counting the little zuni fetish doll in “Trilogy of Terror”. Yeah, I know, it sucks compared to Diablo II, but there you go.

  5. I loved it!! I loved it!! I loved it a lot!! ^_^
I thought the movie was great! I wanna see it again. How I can tel when a movie is good is when I almost scream from all the excitment. But I was in the theaters so I just held it in, even though I did a little squeak in one part. And I don’t really care on what other people are saying about the movie. I thought every second of it was great! Well except for the begining. That part made me feel sick. And even though I missed the end and that part with the gamma thingy, I still loved it. And the actors where so good. I’m surprised that those army people looked as if they where actually shooting at something. And in all the pictures from the movie I didn’t know that The Hulk was made from the cpu. In the pictures I saw he looked real. Call me stupid I don’t care. I still think it was funny in the movie with that poodle. When I get the movie I’m gonna watch it so many times that I will eventually mess up the tape.(Like I did my other really good movies.) I still say I don’t wanna be in his way on one of those bad days.Uh-Uh no way. I would crawl under a rock unless I didn’t get kiiled. I wouldn’t be afraid of him like all the other scaredy-cats.Well maybe. But if i show that I’m good and inocent. With those big puppy-eyes( just kidding) I think I will live to see my 15 b-day.

    • Re: Uhhhhhh?

What the heck is a mass i know its wat the hulk is but wat is it exactly?
      Some1 tell me!!!!!

It’s the amount of matter in a body. Your mass doesn’t change when
you go from one planet to another, but your weight does. This is
because your weight, technically, is the force with which the planet
you’re on pulls you down. In the metric system, mass is measured in
grams, kilograms, and the like, while weight is measured in Newtons,
kilonewtons, etc. In the imperial system, there are two different units
labelled “pound” used for both purposes. In other words, if your mass is
six pounds, then so is your weight on the Earth’s surface. However, if
your weight on the surface of the moon would be closer to one pound,
although your mass would still be six pounds.

Let me know if you’re still confused. I hope to teach high school math
and physics starting about this time next year, so I can use the practice.

i wonder if they’re gonna make a hulk2? Aaaaaah maybe not.

There is an option in Eric Bana’s contract for two sequels as far as I know. Jennifer Connelly may return, but I haven’t heard anything as to whether Ang Lee would direct any sequels.

Ang Lee and James Schmaus are already working on the script to a
sequel. In the early stages, it includes a grey Hulk, the Abomination,
        and the Leader.

Absorbing Man (David Banner as a super-villain) couldn’t absorb the
Hulk’s energy output, and “short circuited.” Glen Talbot shot a grenade
at the Hulk, only to have it ricochet back and detonate on a wall behind
him, killing him. I think those were the two major deaths, and neither
was named Brian. Is one of them the one you were thinking of?

  15. hi
hi again, i was just wondering if some1 could tell me where i can find some good THe Hulk Movie quizzes

  16. HI
Hi im new, my friend told me about this place and she told me it was really kool. SO wats the whole story about the hulk i never seen the movie, only the old one.

  17. Steaming Pile…

Sorry Fiz, gotta disagree with you on this one.

I’m sure I’ve seen worse films, but not many. The story drags, the effects are poor, and the ending just sucks. It was obvious that Ang Lee didn’t understand the source material or just didn’t care enough to do a decent job.
