Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, ” It’s a somewhat slow week, but the releases we are getting are doozies. I didn’t watch Game of Thrones Season 2 when it aired, because I don’t get HBO, but I’m gonna get the show on Blu-Ray anyway.” Blaine says, “I’ve actually seen and can recommend Best in Show, Monsters, Inc. and The Terminator, but my must-see list also includes Hitchcock, Argo, Blood and Chrome, Flash Gordon and Insider.”
I refuse to watch any more Game of Thrones. I read book one when the show started filming because I didn’t want to watch it without reading the book first (good decision IMO).
Then book 5 came out. Then I realised that George R. R. Martin just has no idea where he’s going with this thing, and I kind of hate when book series do that. Especially when they’re being written by someone with high risk factors for dropping dead before they’re done.
I did make it through book 2 which devolved REALLY quickly into gratuitous sex and violence (rather than book 1’s more plot-related sex and violence).
I also realised there are zero, and I mean absolutely ZERO characters to sympathise with in this thing. You could kinda maybe kinda if you tried sympathise with Eddard (sp?) in the first book. And I’ve heard some people say they can sympathise with Aria but Martin is writing her into a fairly loathsome character by book 2. I just can’t even feel bad for anyone because the bad people are, well, bad, and the other people are, well, idiots who bring all the bad things on themselves.
/essay
I lost interest after the third book. However, the show (though it has its faults) finds its own direction after the first season (rather like Walking Dead), and this will be one I watch now that it’s easily available.
Argo would be my other pick o’ the week.
Your loss, really.
I can see where he’s headed with it and I’m liking it. No, there are not really any sympathetic characters, but that’s life. What I love about the series is these are far more realistic characters. Good, noble, “boy scouts” end up the same way they do in real life, with a knife in the back.
That said, I can’t help but root for Tyrion. He’s actually finding his way towards something and (if I’m right) it will be awesome.
