High Point
The departure from Hogwarts at the end of chapter 29.
Low Point
This is not as much fun as the other books, as vanyel
mentioned in the
spoiler-ridden
discussion column. It’s true to the nature of the story,
but it’s
not quite what I was hoping for. Most of the dreary parts
are early
in the book, so just keep reading and that’ll sort itself out,
for the
most part.
The Scores
I’m going to stick with our original scoring system for this
review.
I agree that it needs modification (or at least, a standard
set of
rubrics available to all), but it’ll have to do until we get the
new
model sorted out.
As you might be able to tell from the Premise above, the
sweeping plot
is not even an original plan compared to the
other books.
Significant events tend to happen through the course of
the school
year, happening primarily in the first week of school and at
major
holidays. Some of the finer details are new to the series,
but others
are things that the readers of previous books would know
are coming.
I give it 2 out of 6. (Entries in a series seem to suffer in
this
category, too.)
The imagery is the minimal detail that we had
in the previous
books. It’s good enough, but not earth-shattering. I give it
4 out
of 6.
The story is similar in tone and planning to the
fourth book.
It seems like Goblet of Fire was where
Rowling decided to
step it up a notch, bringing the series into more mature
territory.
Mysteries have been revealed that were hinted at in the
last volume,
but others (like the specific source of Dumbledore’s trust of
Snape
have been mentioned again, but left until later. Most of the
plot
threads introduced here have been wrapped up, and some
of the
seemingly pointless offhand dialogue from the last book
has been
brought into this one. (In one case, rather forceibly.) I
give it 5
out of 6.
The characterization has some developments
for James Potter,
Sirius Snape, Cho Chang, Neville Longbottom, Severus
Snape, Albus
Dumbledore, Percy Weasley, and (in particular) Minerva
McGonagall.
(Professor McGonagall, in particular, has some excellent
moments in
this book.) New characters, like the new Defense of the
Dark Arts
teacher, are fairly well developed. Harry, Ron, and
Hermione are
virtually unchanged, which is unfortunate in the main cast.
I give it
4 out of 6.
The emotional response this produced was
fairly good. I was
miserable when Harry was miserable (which happened a
bit too often, in
my opinion,) and I laughed out loud at several times,
particularly
when there were staff disagreements or when the Weasley
twins were
involved. I give it 5 out of 6.
The editing could have used a trim. For
example, neither
Dumbledore’s comment at least year’s Yule Ball nor the
follow-up
explaining that comment this year need have been
included; that
segment stands up well enough on its own without it. I like
the
hinting at things to come, but the repetition in describing
dreams and
such was a bit much. I give it 4 out of 6.
Overall, it’s a welcome addition to a series
that just can’t
get published fast enough. I recommend it to any fan of
the series.
I give it 5 out of 6. Yes, it starts out dreary, but it looks like
it’s set to just move forward with events rather than
exposition for
the rest of the series.
In total, Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix receives
28 out of 42.
Low Point
I think your "low point" describes the tone perfectly–less fun, but it had to go this way to be true to the story. I’m not sure it’s a "low point" when looking at it like that, but I could see a lot of kids scratching their heads at this one, because it’s more psychological and less wondrous. I do believe adults (and teenagers who started reading the books as they came out, when they were kids) can relate to it well.
I’d guess I’d say the low point was forgetting to use the mirror to communicate with Sirius, and sneaking into Umbridge’s office the 2nd time. Though I guess that was necesary for the plot, I suppose Kreacher could’ve answered the mirror too, and Umbridge could have caught them at that.
Not sure if I needed spoilers in a review (we’ve sort of decided around here that if you didn’t get your copy last Friday night, you didn’t deserver protection), but better safe than sorry.

I am new in this site but I was totally stun by the review given by the author. I agree with it especially the low point part. My first reaction after reading the Book 5 was Book 4 was better of hanging your excitement and longing for the release of the next book. I really believe that Rowling should had not put the low point at the near end. However, the author of the review should had given the book a higher point.
good book
this book is relly good, i felt that harry was a little too mad a litte too often. it sucks that sirius dies, the of killed someone like fudge. there was also a serousis lack of quidittich. harry should also hook up with more girls and espaccailly ones who arnt all pms’ed up like that crazy asian cho chang. harry was rude to dumbledore at the end, if i was dumbledore i would of blasted harrys ass right there. there was excitement in the book, and a lot of info was sorted out in this one. i thing the last to books were relly for a teen top adult reader…………. i cate wait for the next movie and the next book

TONS OF SPOILERS AHEAD BUT IF U HAVNT READ THE BOOK BY NOW THEN TOO BAD MUAHAHAHA!!Yea his mood kind of sucked a lot i thought he excluded Ron and Hermoine throughout the book so much that i was half expecting one of them to get killed later on just to shake up Harry for being such a d***. I knew someone was supposed to die but i really couldnt figure out who it would be although before Cho and Harry broke up i thought she was definitly it via Voldemort’s mind reading of Harry he’d have found out about her taken her and we get the picture. Maybe later on that leaves room to develop Hermoine or hell even Ginny as a love interest and add even more maturity to the story. I did find Harry and Rons lack of understanding for girls more then amusing though. I also liked finding out so much about Dumbledore’s almost Sirius-like need to shelter Harry as it makes u wonder what else happenned in Dumbledore’s life. They mention a brother too man i hope there will be a Dumbledore book someday that would be very interesting. I thought this was the second best book of the series so far (nothing beats book 4) Umbridge was great but i was really salivating to get a bit more retribution on her by the end of the novel other then having the centaurs take her. I also would have liked the story to open the battle lines more clearly by having Voldemort show he has power over the dementors and giants thus setting the stage for the beginning of the second war. Lastly you’ve gotta give props to the Weasley twins they just couldnt stop being funny the whole story and i think i’ve re-read their escape from Hogwarts a dozen times.

I could say that it is a very good one because it can provoke emotions to the readers. It can make you laugh when needed and cry. It can also sharpen our imagination. Heck, it is the most wonderful book I have ever read since 2:30 pm this afternoon. :)
