Other new direction possibilities:
– descent acting
– internally consitant plots
– interesting plot lines
– not so many caverns!
– something that makes it worth the title Star Trek
– the public hanging of B&B ;-)

Seriously though if these are done well, doubtful given ST-E’s history, it could be actually worthwhile giving it a second chance… maybe.

I’m planning on watching the first four or five episodes next season, and then we’ll see what happens. Frankly, I kept getting sucked back in by the ‘better’ episodes last season, and I’m not planning on letting that happen again.
I’m not sure about some of these “new directions”, as I think some of them are going to have most of the fans screaming for B&B’s heads (T’Pol exploring her emotions and Trip becoming intimate with her – I can’t see either of those making a lot of people happy). As near as I can tell, the only reason T’Pol would get a “new hair colour” is so Jolene Blalock won’t have to continue wearing a wig, and new costumes for her just translates to more T&A in my head. The MACO guys make it sound like someone has been playing Elite Force and thought it would make a good addition, and make me foresee a number of “stupid civilian / arrogant military” comments.
I could see a darker Archer being interesting, but that’s about it.

I’d have to check the timelines for consistency, but I could also go with
T’Pol’s emotional side if she ends up as a founding member of the
Romulans.

Wouldn’t that have to bring time travel into the equation? We all know how T’Pol feels about that, plus we’ve already ‘seen’ the Romulans in Minefield.
I was always under the impression that the T’Pol character was the same one as seen in TOS episode Amok Time (the old lady on the chair who Spock greets). Of course, now that I’ve checked the episode guide and find that the character was called “T’Pau”, who knows? It would be cool if she defected and started the Romulan War… almost like continuity….

It was supposed to be T’Pau, but they coulnd’t get the rights to the character. I think that’s good, it’d have just been very, very annoying. But that’s just me.

I guess this is a point where I will have to disagree. It seems to me that it has become trendy in scifi to have dark characters. This seems to be a natural repsonse to the old sci-fi (and especially Trek trend) of having perfect, one-dimensional, politically correct characters. The fans have been complaining about this, so the writers have been weeding out the politically correct characters and replacing them with Dirty Harry style bada**es. The only problem is that these characters are just as flat and one dimensional as the ones they are replacing:
Old, annoying trend: There’s a conflict between two ships and tension is mounting. Archer drops the shields and powers down the weapons on Enterprise as a sign of good faith. The other captain accepts, they enter negotiations, and everyone goes home happy.
Never Happens: There’s a conflict between two ships and tension is mounting. Archer drops the shields and powers down the weapons on Enterprise as a sign of good faith. The other captain accepts the cheap shot and kills a quarter of the crew before the ship can get back into fighting condition.
New annoying trend: The ship stumbles across an alien vessel acting suspiciously. Enterprise shoots first and asks questions later. Those questions now reveal that the aliens were hauling deadly weapons, but everythnig is ok because they were blown to bits.

I believe that, by and large, the fans aren’t as upset with Trek because they always take the politically correct route, but because the politically correct route always works. The great counter example is last season’s Cogenitor, where doing all the “right things” only made matters worse.

Don’t forget that Mr. Roddenberry used the original series to point out where society had strayed from what was right and ethical. Sometimes force was necessary and sometimes negotiation was the more prudent course. Star Trek, as originally conceived, was very politically correct and remaining that way now is certainly a tribute to Gene.
As for the Temporal Cold War arc; If it isn’t over-used, as X-Files over-used the mythology arc, it should be tollerable. I enjoy episodic television more than I do recurring theme television. Just MHO.
I am looking forward to the new season. It will be one of two shows that I must watch. Alias fell from grace and will not be tuned in again.
My Thoughts.
Personally, i’d like to see T’Pol be a strong character without the need to wear a spray on uniform. Maybe dress a bit more like Hoshi yet somehow manage to not have the reverse clevage thing going. That’s always been a pet peeve of mine about recent trek. The women that are attractive are made into sex pot hotties instead of strong, independant attractive characters.
Oh No! Better Get MACO !
And even THOSE GUYS couldn’t patch up this head-on disaster of a series. Archer gets darker ….T’its gets brighter….gimme a break….

HAHAHAHAHAHA. T’its? Or would it be T’tits? How about a Vulcan woman wearing a non-revealing robe, the same kind of robe worn by a Vulcan man? They’re a logical species, one would think clothing would not be used to enhance or exaggerate meaningless gender-specific features …
As for Berman and Braga being clueless, I can see the same answer being used next year to the question “why was Enterprise cancelled by UPN?”
