Amazon
  • DVD: US, CAN
Comments Blaine: First of all, I’ve never seen an episode. I’m just wondering how “off the grid” these people can be if they’re surrounded by a professional TV crew. Given the network in question, I’m assuming this is more of a documentary style, finding people who live off the grid already and just documenting how it is done, rather than putting people off the grid for the show, but my gut instinct is still “wha-?!”
The Mummy (1932)
Amazon
  • Blu-Ray: US, CAN
The OC: The Complete Series
Amazon
  • DVD: US, CAN
The Odd Couple (film)
Amazon
  • Blu-Ray: US, CAN
Comments Blaine: The very concept of this shows the evolution of Hollywood entertainment. When made, nobody would have thought of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as a romantic couple, and there’s no hint that they were supposed to be in the film. Had they remade this in the 1980s, I’m betting they’d have changed the name to eliminate the possibility of that interpretation. If they remade it today, it wouldn’t surprise me if they went all in and decided they were a romantic couple.

Comments Blaine: One of Hitchcock’s experimental films. This time around, he tried to film a movie in one continuous shot. There are visible cuts around the opening and closing credits and another in the ending conversation which are plainly visible. Recording technology at the time had ten minute limits, so he had to try and hide the other cuts, and did a decent job. The story is mediocre, but it’s interesting to watch it with an eye to the way films are constructed and why editing is such a powerful piece of film vocabulary. Rear Window still gets my vote for the greatest of Hitchcock’s experimental films, partly because it is so well made that most of the audience doesn’t even realize it’s experimental.
Sadako 3D
Amazon

  • 3D Blu-Ray: US, CAN
Comments The latest installment in the Japanese version The Ring series (and really, if you’re going to do an 3D film with a bunch of “toward the screen effects” why not do it with a franchise with a character known for coming out of TV screens.

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “look to library titles for anything this week, notably the Hitchcock box, The Invisible Man and/or The Sting if you don’t own them already.” Alex says, “Not a good week this week. If you don’t own the Mad Max movies, that collection might be worth getting, but otherwise I’d recommend waiting until later before buying anything.”

  1. I assume you meant Quantum of Solace was the flawed one. If so I do agree, but not for the reason you stated.

While in the theatre I actually started to time the shots. There was no shot longer than 4 seconds or so. It was crazy. Kept jumping around.

Now when you have a close-quarters fight, where you’re cutting every 2 seconds, you should at LEAST make the good guy and bad guy wear different coloured clothes. It was impossible to follow the action.

    • Amen to that. I totally lost track of who was who and had a hell of a headache after about 15 minutes into the film.

Not a horrid movie, but could have been much better.
