Premise

Matt Murdock’s secret identity is revealed to a tabloid, which then
reveals it to the world. This collects issues 32-40 of
Daredevil volume 2.

High Point

The Daily Bugle staff meeting.

Low Point

Cage and Rand over the phone. I don’t care how sensitive
Murdock’s
ears are, the cell phone won’t pick up the sounds for
transmission.

The Scores

This entire volume revolves around events that haven’t
happened to
Daredevil before. Something similar happened to Iron Man
around this
time, but I’ve heard enough about that story to know it wasn’t
handled
nearly this well. Murdock’s life is going to change forever. I give
it 6 out of 6 for originality.

The artwork still grates. The pencils are made up of
straight lines, using linear splines where there should be curves.
J. Jonah Jameson is wearing a patterened shirt whose pattern is
oriented “up and down,” meaning that the pattern doesn’t bend
when he
bends his elbow. I can never forget that this is hand drawn art.
Things get a bit better when we move into the Gutirrez issues, but
then the Dodson issue comes along and does some nasty work
to Matt’s
face. I give it 3 out of 6.

The story is fantastic. The events are well woven
together,
and the ramifications for the cast of characters in the book are
incredibly plausible. Excellent, excellent story. I give it 6 out of
6.

The characterization drives the excellent story. It
has to
be better than the plot; when the plot revolves around destroying
a
person’s life and putting his friends at risk, you have to care about
the person and his friends. Bendis is a master at this sort of
thing. Every character has depths and behaviour that come
through very
clearly, and are exposed by actions rather than exposition. I
give it
6 out of 6.

The emotional response this produced was
excellent. I was
hooked from the outset, and it didn’t let up. The sensations of
dread
that built up in the beginning never went away, either. I think this
may end up taking a higher priority for collection than some of my
other titles very soon. I give it 6 out of 6.

The flow was impeded both by the changing artists,
and (in
the non-Gutirrez issues) by the art itself. Maleev art doesn’t give
me that dynamic feel from page to page, while the Dodson art
threw me
out of the volume every time I looked at Murdock’s nose. I give it
4
out of 6.

Overall, the writing overcomes the art problems. I
would
recommend this to anyone. I give it 6 out of 6.

In total, Daredevil: Out receives 37 out of 42.

    So I’m thinking….
Maybe the readers of B42 don’t much care for that many comic reviews?

    ‘Ya think??

They generate less discussion, but the number of page views is
      on par with other material.

Maybe it’s because while we are interested in comics, most people don’t buy the ones reviewed, so there is little to discuss since we haven’t read it.

Interesting point. I do wonder though if page views is as valid indicator of interest as actual discussion about the subject. Intuitively I feel this may not be the case.

I’ve been wondering about this myself. if it weren’t for the fact that I have actually started buying some of these comics and started reading more comics in general, I’d not bother writing any myself. I’m still not sure.

Hey, try writing book reviews if you want to feel unappreciated!

in the process of doing just that.

Can’t fault that. The pageviews may be on par, but it sure is mind-numbing. And besides, discussion is half the fun of the news. While reviewing the occasional TP is fine, fun, and dandy, reviewing a bunch of monthlies is trite and repetitive.

I care… but I have to agree with many and various people above that perhaps monthly’s are not so wise, perhaps not just TP’s but maybe reviewing after a plot arc, which is still quiet frequent.

I do enjoy the reviews (all of them – book’s et al) it is interesting to see someone elses views on a subject and to see if I agree with the high low points etc.

Keep up the good work all you fine and spiffingly excellent reviewer people. Come on people, join me in “Hug a reviewer day”!!
