New DC Comics TV Series Likely Coming: “Gotham”

The full report is on Variety. Fox is committed to producing multiple episodes of “Gotham,” focusing on James Gordon before Batman comes to town. This doesn’t guarantee it’ll be broadcast, it just means that Fox wants to judge it from multiple episodes instead of just a pilot. With this announcement breaking now, fall 2014 is the soonest I’d expect it to year, and 2015 may be more realistic.

  1. It’s an interesting idea, though it seems as though it’s only being done in reaction to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (which I thought was great tonight)

    I’d still watch it.

    • S.H.I.E.L.D. review will be up by this afternoon.

Meanwhile– yeah– this would be different conceptually than SHIELD, if they made it at all like the comic. Do they have any plans to tie it into Arrow? It could become the lynchpin to a DCU media franchise, since the premise should have broad appeal.

        • More importantly, they don’t seem to be using Renee Montoya and they’re definitely not using the original premise. This won’t be cops in the shadow of the Bat; this will be Gotham before the Bat. Unless they’re willing to change that premise after a season or two (assuming they have a season or two), this may collapse even more than Smallville did under the weight of its own restrictions.

          • As long as it’s better than the Gotham-after-the-Bat world we got in the Birds of Prey show, I think it may do OK.

The main drawback with the “before the Bat” setup is that some villains didn’t get started until after Batman showed up (and in some cases, created them). That alone may be too big of a restriction, but SHIELD may also rise or fall in similar ways with its similar restrictions.

I’m cautiously optimistic, willing to give it a go, but I’m also hesitant to the point where I’m not sure I’d stick with it if the first few episodes aren’t good.
