Jake 2.0 Discussion – “Arms and the Girl”

There’s a new episode of Jake 2.0 on tonight. Let’s
see how that and Enterprise fare against season
premiers of Smallville and Angel. (Full
reviews of Angel and Enterprise will be
posted instead of discussion forums this season.)

  1. Pointless Trivia
For those of you who learned a useful foreign language, the title is an allusion to Virgil’s Aeneid. The first three words are “Arma virumque cano”, which translates out to “I sing of Arms and the Man”.

(Of course, certain editions begin with “Ille ego qui”, but those are usually considered wrong.)

Even when I was a Classics guy (before I fled academia for greener pastures) I wasn’t much a fan of Virgil and tried to avoid him whenever possible.

And it looks like I’ll be passing on Jake 2.0 now, too! While last night’s premiere of Angel wasn’t the best episode of that series, it was still light years beyond Jake 2.0 and I don’t think I’ll even bother taping the latter show in the future.

Actually, I thought last this week’s episode was decent. Although I should have expected the twist, it was a surprise, though I then deduced the counter-surprise. I’ve definitely seen far worse, though I have to admit, if I had to choose between Jake and Enterprise, it would probably lose just because of morbid curiosity. Against Angel or Smallville, it would be no contest, but fortunately, I don’t have to make that choice…
