Dr. Who == Eddie Izzard

Anonymous Coward writes, According to this story on UK’s The Sun website,
comedian and transvestite Eddie Izzard is up for the role of The
Doctor in the revival of BBC’s Dr. Who.

Also mentioned as possibilites are Alan Davies, from
Jonathan
Creek
, and Richard E Grant.

I think Eddie would be pretty interesting…. I’m not familiar
with UK papers. Anyone care to enlighten us on the average
accuracy of a report from this source?

  1. Izzard?
They gotta be nuts, he’s completely nuts! Hm.. well, perhaps he’ll fit fine then *G*

  2. Yeah, I’m insane…
I think it could work. I’ve only seen ‘Dress To Kill’ and ‘Circle,’ but when I read the news here – something just clicked and connected. I’m not really a super-hardcore Dr. Who fan, though. So, I’m not coming at it from that kind of perspective.

  3. I think it could work.
Granted, none of this is for sure. Tom Baker said it on the Radio, but IIRC he also hinted (back in 81?) that the Doctor after him might be a female. Did it purely to screw with people. But Eddie would be cool. I can see it.

  4. Another choice

    Anthony Stewart Head

(I have to thank Peter David for suggesting that one. I’d link to his blog post on the matter but I can’t seem to access his site this morning.)

  5. This would be VERY cool….
heh…I’m going to see him in “concert” on the 27th – if I get the chance to meet him, I’ll ask him. I’m not a Dr. Who fan, but if Izzard were the Dr, I’d watch any chance I got…

I saw him one of the nights he was in L.A. It was fantastic. I’ve been a huge fan for years, (even waiting 4 hours to have him sign my dvd at the release party) and it was so great to finally see him in concert. It’s gonna be so worth your money.

As for the story, yeah, Eddie would make a great Dr. Who. He has surprisingly good acting range…. he played chaplin very well in “the cat’s meow”.

  6. Retracted?
The Sun page has disappeared and I could find no reference on their home page. Has this been recanted? It would be an interesting choice…

  7. The Sun
You cannot trust anything you read in The Sun. Granted, it’s the most popular newspaper in the UK, but in my opinion that just shows how stupid the majority of the population really are. Since I recently have proof that The Sun has printed complete and total lies in the past, I wouldn’t believe this. Eddie Izzard may be considered, but there’s no way they’ve chosen anyone at the moment, which is no doubt what they would have been wanting to imply.

    • Re: /. link

Most Of Us Read /., But They Just Posted A Link To A BBC Article About Eddie As The Doc.

Might Be Some Credability After All.

That’s much more credible, but until the BBC officially announce it, I’m not going to take it as decided.
