  1. New direction is right!
I was totally surprised (but not completely surprised) at the new directions the show took. Some of this stuff was bound to happen eventually. I guess I just never saw it happening yet. Clark and Lana are finished. Lex embraces some of his dark side. Could he be planning betrayals of both his father and Clark? When he and Clark met for the first time after the accidents, the hug seemed totally sincere. It’s so hard to imagine them being arch enemies. But when he hugged his father, there was the big of doubt for me. Like he’s just setting Lionel up for something big.

Overall I thought it was a great episode. But no Pete!!?? Come on! That was very disappointing. But what kind of deal did Jonathan make with Jor El? And there seemed to be a hint that it wasn’t really Jor El in some of the comments Jonathan made. Regardless, I can’t wait to see where the season goes from here. No more “freak of the week” episodes it seems. Next weeks doesn’t look to be like that, just a regular garden variety freak.

I was expecting a poison ring in the handshake, myself. But although they wrapped up a little too much too fast (I thought shattering the ring again was a little unoriginal, and since “good” Clark wanted to be bad, I thought he turned too good without it), they’ve definitely set this season up for a lot of story development. Still, I’ve got to wonder: with just about everyone seemingly knowing Clark’s weak points (green kryptonite bullets next week?), how on earth did he *ever* survive to become Superman? They’ve got some serious explaining to do before they finish this series…

  2. Interesting Episode
They are doing so many unique things with Lex that makes it hard for you to root for him or to boo when he’s on the screen.

    I like it.

When he hugged Clark it looked geniune.

When he hugged Lionel, I was going ‘shoot him!, no you’re gonna poison him somehow during the hug!’ but nothing happend.

Though I must admit, I was disaapointed with the previews for next week. We’re back to the kryptonite freak of the week again. They did so well the last few episodes I thought they were going to step forward with the superman mythos. The little flash of an S on his chest after that other design burned off was great.

I am expecting Johnathon Kent to have his heart attack any day now. I really expected it after he brought him home. I don’t want to see John S. leave the cast that quickly but I thought it would have really set in the ‘bad clark’ and shown him there was a bit more repercussions than telling the cops where the money is, and Lana and him leaving things super ambiguously.

All in all though, I’m glad I watched this over ST:E.

So someone ‘splain to me what’s going on. Was he fighting some other Kryptonian when he crushed his red kryptonite ring?

It looks like Jonathan was temporarily granted superhuman
abilities in order to take Clark down. He was fighting a
        temporarily enhanced human.

  3. Thank God!

    That damn scar is gone!

Clark and Lana troubles paving the way for the intro of a Miss Lois Lane?

So, did Lex drop Helen off on his little island “paradise”?

I thought it was nice how the Kents managed to keep the farm, but will it come back to bite them in the ass?

When Jonathan and Clark were brawling in the beginning of the ep, was anyone else expecting the General Lee to come riding to the rescue? Just me? Oh, okay…

    • other fish to fry

Canonically, the next girlfriend should be Lori Lemaris, but I can’t imagine the show diving into that territory.

Just wish Smallville wasn’t running a week later in our area. I won’t see this ep ’til next week.

      • Re: other fish to fry

Ooh, Lori Lemaris would be interesting.

I think I read somewhere just recently that Lois might be showing up this season. Or was that Jimmy Olsen? Definitely not Bruce Wayne, though.

        • Re: other fish to fry
I can only pray that it’s not Lois, unless she’s in town and somehow misses meeting Clark. Otherwise, it seems like it ruins the whole joining the Daily Planet then getting to know Lois deal which I think should remain untouched, even if they’re not going to take this series to Metropolis. Jimmy Olsen could be amusing, but it would have to be a 10-year-old Olsen boy in order to keep things resembling straight – maybe a Chloe cousin just to give some linkage?

Lori Lemaris…That could indeed be fun. I don’t know if they’re ready to go that “comic book,” though.

Erm… this may sound completely dumb but whose this Lori Lemaris??

Short version: She’s a mermaid and in the comics she was one of Clark’s girlfriends over the years (they met in college).

For more info, I recommend a Google search (i.e., “superman girlfriend lori lemaris”), though that will provide you with far more information than you could ever need. :)

          It’s Perry White

          • Re: other fish to fry

No, I could swear this was in addition to Perry.

But, I could be imagining it…

“Now them Kent boys got themselves into a heap of trouble this time. Where’s ole Uncle Lionel when ya need ‘im?”

  4. Exile + Phoenix = Impressive
Having to DL the episodes is rather annoying, but – wow – that was worth the wait. These last two episodes stand out in my mind as some of the finest that Smallville has ever produced (granted they are season openers, but still, having to chose between that and Enterprise would be an easy decision).

My personal favorite moment was Clark ripping the door off of Edge’s car – to me, this is how someone with superpowers should act when they are threatened. I’m hoping that they will start to have Clark be a little more assertive with his use of powers this season (I half expected them to use the money he stole to save the farm, but I suppose that wouldn’t have been Kent-ish). The low point had to have been his inaction when his parents were threatened – it was something that I would have expected from season one or two Clark, not this new season three version.

Hopefully I’ll be able to DL the episodes a little sooner next week, and actually be able to comment with the rest of you.

  5. Kryptonite’s bad.. Unless there’s a real problem
    Hiya

I just wanted to say that it seems the effects of kryptonite vary quite a bit in magnitude, depending on the plot requirements.

He’s like TOTALLY incapacitated in the back of the truck. There’s a great hunking rock of the stuff strapped to his chest and it knocked him out when it was simply HOLDING it back in the barn. So, anyway, he’s really out of it, yeah? When it comes to being revealed as “the source” at the dock, he suddenly gets the strength to rip it off and throw it away. When has that ever happened? Then instantly blows up the truck and is unhurt, even though he was still recovering. Oh well.

Secondly, I would really like it if Lana didn’t play the same role over and over and over and over again. It goes like this:

Lana and Clark meet in some way. She looks awkward and so does he.. Neither of them know what to say. We, the viewers scream at the TV for him to tell her the truth and finally get together with her.. He breaks her heart and says (usually) “I’m sorry, Lana”.. She leaves the scene, crying.

SURELY there’s something else the writers can think of, here?

Thirdly (and I know this is a bit anal of me for bringing it up) it would have been no problem at all for him to take out the two gunmen in the barn before they had a clue what the hell was going on. Let’s look at some calculations.. (I realise continuity is not their strong point, but even so)

In a previous episode, he was recorded as a blue blur on a video camera. The blur covered, let’s say, 2 meters. Let’s be kind and say that the exposure time was 1/25 of a second. This means he was traveling at a speed of, roughly, 50 metres per second. The guys in the barn were about 10 metres apart, so (while he was standing next to one of them) he could have traversed the distance in 0.2 seconds. The reaction time of most humans is about 0.4 seconds. It should be noted that he wasn’t really trying in the video camera shot, so he can probably travel a LOT faster than this. In fact 50m/s seems REALLY slow for superman. In other words, as soon as the guy had started speaking “I know you’re fast, but…”, clark would have taken out both the guys and be dangling him from the top of the barn. I rest my case.

    Wow, that *was* anal..

    Ok, ENOUGH!
