Trek V: Who’s The Captain Gonna Be?

Trek Today, source of all great rumors, is reporting the wholly unconfirmed rumor that Scott Bakula is “in negotiations” for the role of the ship’s captain in the next Trek series (y’know, the one that Paramount still won’t even publicly acknowledge is being planned). Tongue planted firmly in cheek, IGN explores the possibilities, from Bruce Campbell to Lucy Lawless. So, assuming there will be a fifth series, who would you like to see as the newest captain?

  1. The New Captian
My thoughs on the people suggested for captian of the new Enterprise. Scott Bakula would make a great choice. He has shown he can do drama and comedy. Lucy Lawless, well, this is the final year of Xena and she will need job. But I just can’t see her as captian. Bruce “gimme some sugar, baby” Campbell would be a hoot and a real change of pace. We haven’t had a captian with a sense of humor in a long while.

  2. The New Captain
If Bruce could keep it toned down a little, I think that he could do really well in the role – assuming that the ‘leaked’ character info is correct ala:

Captain Jackson Archer: Early 40s. Physical. Bold personality. Intensely curious. Born and raised an explorer. Unlike the Starfleet captains in centuries to come, he exhibits a sense of wonder and excitement, as well as a little trepidation about the strange things he will encounter. He holds a grudge against the Vulcans, who he blames for impeding humanity’s progress. But his science officer is Vulcan, and he’s struggling to reconsider those preconceptions. Although he has a strong sense of duty, he’s a bit of a renegade – he’s not afraid to question orders or even disobey them if he feels in his gut that he’s right…”

  3. Sulu?
According to my co-workers, they already decided Sulu would be the captain…

  4. The Sulu Thing
There was a fan movement to make a series about Sulu and his ship, which George Takei endorsed. However, Paramount never said they would do it, and it would be inconsistent with all the rumours we’ve heard so far. (ie. prequel to series one, casting list which I still don’t quite believe, etc.) I think they’ll be launching the new show with a completely new set of characters, though. I doubt any network (such as UPN) that is trying to appeal to the younger, spendier generation would have a captain in his fifties. If the signs are right and it is going to UPN, then we can assume a younger, more attractive captain would be desirable. After all, they wanted B5: Crusade to be Baywatch meets Wrestling in space.

Speaking of Crusade, who’d like to see Gary Cole as captain on the new Star Trek?
