Premise

S.H.I.E.L.D. works to bring Coulson back, using their usual tactics.

“Where is the account history?” Nice touch of realism.

Low Point

How does he remember the glowy bits he couldn’t see?

The Review

This is original taking the mystery in a completely different direction than I’d expected. It’s also a perfectly reasonable way to show the team in a new situation. I give it 5 out of 6.

The effects were minimal, but enjoyable. They also further erode my criticism of previous exposure to Tahiti. I give it 6 out of 6.

The story was solid, if predictable at times. (Predictable in structure, not discoveries.) I give it 5 out of 6.

The acting was well done from all. I give it 5 out of 6.

The production is effectively done as usual. I give it 5 out of 6.

The emotional response is very good. The revelations were nice, and the classic 1970s/1980s comic structure (teasing a future story in the last page or two of an issue) seems to be something of an effective hallmark of the show. I give it 5 out of 6.

Overall, it’s a consistently strong episode, setting up a different attitude and a new mystery, with a welcome surprise guest star. I give it 5 out of 6.

In total, The Magical Place receives 36 out of 42.
