Smallville Discussion – “Perry”

Michael McKean guest stars as Perry White this week. For
those who are asking “Why Michael McKean?” I say “He’s
married to Annette O’Toole.”

  1. Ummmm…
This guy’s supposed to be Perry White, hire Clark Kent as a reporter for the daily planet, and never figure out that CK is Superman? And he’s a Pulitzer nominated investigative reportere? It seems to me that a hot-shot reporter might have noticed that Clark’s messed up hands had healed completely by the time they were neded for the goodbye handshake. Maybe not right away, but when Clark Kent comes to Metropolis and Superman moves in at the same time, I would think that Perry might have to re-think his “gee, I must’ve been halucinating” speech.

Conversely, the whole Luthor storyline was well done.

Oh, and if they just decide to ignore continuity completely and let Perry figure it out, then no objections. I don’t think they’ve really gone that far overboard before, though. Of course, I’m not a Superman trivia buff, so they might’ve already screwed up continuity and I could’ve missed it.

He saw him bleed. That pretty much kills the whole “Oh, he’s
      invulnerable” thing. Same for Lex.

If you ask me, Clark will end up telling people his “secret”: He knew
about Superman all along and swore not to tell anyone. He’ll do an
      exclusive interview, it,ll be allright.

Maybe, but in the current continuity Clark goes off for a while (at least a few years) after Smallville and before Metropolis doing good deeds with his super powers. It wouldn’t be a stretch to think that Superman spends some time in Metropolis before Clark goes to The Daily Planet looking for a gig, so Perry could chalk it up to coincidence.

It’s also not unreasonable to think that after a while Perry, and probably others, figure out that Clark is Superman and decide to just sit on it for the greater good.

If all else fails, though, there’s always Super Hypnosis. Woot!

Reminds me of a sturday night live sketch with the Rock as superman : )

      That’s it, I’m making a list!

      This week: Lana Lang.

You lost me – Lex Running Gag?

You lost me – Lex Running Gag?

Every week, Lex is surprised to find someone in his house he wasn’t
expecting. Usually in that office-living room he’s allways in.
        In every show.
Its been like that since the pilot (It was Clark). About half the time its his
father, but there was the wall-walking burglars, that evil reporter, etc.

One exception: When he was stuck on a desert island, then it was his
wife who was surprised to find the unexpected Lionel Luthor in that
        same room. : )

        I notice things…

  2. Michael McKean

Am I the only person who finds McKean very creepy when he is in a non-comic role? Just checking…

I want to know why that rope (which wasn’t even tied very well around his ankle, it looked like) didn’t rip Perry’s foot right off when he plunged over the edge. It didn’t seem like a bungee cable, so wouldn’t the sudden stop at the very least do some serious damage to his ankle?

I found this episode kind of dull, but the final scene (Clark seeing Perry off) was worth it for me. I loved the little hints of the future with Perry going to look up some contacts at the Daily Planet and telling Clark to look him up if he ever got to Metropolis. Nice touch.

Another thing I thought was funny was when Perry White called the sheriff, ‘cheif’. Then the sheriff told him not to call her cheif. Doesn’t Jimmy Olsen call Perry chief later, at least in the Superman movies?

Definitely, and especially in that early B&W television series with George Reeve. (Gee, wish those would come out on DVD, if they haven’t and I’m just being clueless.) Plus, Perry White keeps snapping back, “Don’t call me chief!”

I know they’re corny, but I love those little passing touches and references. The heavy ones are sometimes, “Enough, already!” but the subtler ones are great. She also makes a perfect straight player, as in the “good old boys” remark to Jonathan.

But when is Clark going to learn that destroying cars so thoroughly is not a good way to remain incognito? [checks calendar] Oh, here it is, it’s right after Ice Capades in the 8th circle of Hell!
