This week sees several James Garner films. Those released in physical media were on the schedule before his recent passing, so those are coincidental. The digital releases strike me as rapid releases hoping to ride the wave of nostalgia following his death.

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “although I haven’t seen all of the episodes yet, I’d say Twin Peaks is the best of the bunch.” Alex says, “Fans of Twin Peaks should really get the boxed set. Other than that, I’m interested in checking out The Protector 2 – I enjoyed the action scenes in the first film, and I’m interested in seeing how this one plays out.”
I was unbelievably disappointed in Twin Peaks.
When I was growing up, you could watch it if you had cable. I did not have cable. Some friends of mine looved the show and one of them taped (yeah, tapes!) every episode, and he started lending me the tapes. So I’d watch a few episodes and run over and beg him for the next, because cliffhangers.
One day I watch a tape with the biggest cliffhanger of all times. I was like, wow, can’t WAIT for the next one!
…except there was no next one. I’d just seen the last episode.
Yeah, I know there’s a movie. It didn’t really help.
And yeah, I’m holding a grudge, but seriously, I was a kid, that was a painful experience.
Twin Peaks support group?
I was in my twenties, and the early episodes of the first season totally mesmerized me. Nothing like it had been on television. Locally, the creepiness factor tore through the roof, unfortunately, because, one week after the pilot aired, a young woman, an engineering student, was murdered under mysterious circumstances– body found in an almost-remote area. RIP.
Still, a brilliant series…
….that, IMO, shot rapidly downhill a few weeks into its first season. And while fans and (I think) Lynch insist that Laura Palmer’s murder wasn’t really supposed to have a conclusion– it was the catalyst for other things– it was clear no one initially had any idea what the solution was or what half the clues meant. The post-series movie did not help at all. It has a cult following, but I’m with the people who booed it when it premiered at Cannes.
So, yeah, I feel for you.
(The university student murder was ‘officially’ never solved, though police have since matched DNA to a convicted felon who committed suicide a few years later)
The thing that really bugs me is (and again, I haven’t watched the thing since the very early ’90s so I may be off by a bit) I think in episode 10 we find out her dad killed her. But nooooooooo now it’s some weirdo spirit crap.
But yeah, the first bunch of episodes of that show were really good, and really interesting and really original. Not as creepy for me, because where I lived we were completely desensitised to people being kidnapped and murde… uh. Wait, that might be worse…
Well, for what it’s worth, the Twin Peaks boxed set has an additional 90 minutes of deleted and extended scenes from the film.
It’s too late, man. It’s just too late.
Well, the new footage for Fire Walk With Me couldn’t make it make any less sense.
