JMS is tempting fate again

Anonymous Coward writes, Over at SciFi wire they
are reporting
that JMS is in negotiations to create a new Babylon 5
series. I love
B5, but I’m a little concerned after watching the last B5
movie
(Legend of the Rangers) that maybe he should leave well
enough
alone.

  1. Huh?
I liked Legend of the Rangers. Sure, it had “Pilot!” written all over it, but it had promise. Go back and watch the first few eps of B5 (where the aliens showed more emotion and better acting chops than the humans), and tell me that was better.

  2. JMS original post
In case your interested here is a link to the original post by JMS. Which has one section of note:

I know the immediate result of this will be speculation, but if we could keep that to a low roar on the nets to avoid precluding anything, that would be a wonderfulness. But trust me: I wouldn’t go on about something in this way if it wasn’t a significant development. Just trust me on this one for a bit and hold fire until further word.

Well, I don’t know about you but I think is gonna kinda be hard. Especially after the previous false starts: Crusade and LotR (Legend that is, not Tolkien. Although its yet another JMS/Tolkien reference thang)

Personally I can’t wait I only hope they get enough of a budget and JMS has learnt hsi lessons from Cusade, LotR and Jeremiah and the other recent sci-fi hits (with fans that is not just TV execs) such as Firefly and Farscape.

Personally I think there is a lot you can do in the same universe if he breaks away a bit from the ISA/B5 link and focuses on other sections. Rangers at a push, I suppose, but I would love to see a Psi-Corps dedicated series but as many of my friends say I have a bit of a Psi-fetish going on. Hmmmmm. Patrica Tallman. If you need me I’ll be in my bunk. ;-)

  3. note…

It doesn’t explicitly say “new series”. He could be doing a series of movies, or a mini-series or a new movie or…

    You get the idea.

I’m just hoping for some resolution of the story threads from Crusade.

And FWIW, I mostly liked LotR as well. There were things about it I didn’t like, of course, but on the whole it was a fine effort and could have led to a good series.

  4. will take anything
I was disappointed with LotRangers, which can make you drunker than skunk if you took a shot for every time they said “live for the one, die for the one”. IMO he should have made solid movies that resolved dangling threads like Geribaldi/Bester, or what happened GKar/Lita on their mission, Sheridan’s son and the keeper, etc. etc. Didn’t need yet another mysterious ancient race, the Drakh were fine and left some intrigue since they worked behind the scenes.

What I’m afraid will be missing from a new series is the political conspiracies and intrigue that IMO was really what gave B5 and epic saga quality. I want tight story arcs, not the loose one in Crusades. I also want Christopher Franke to do the music :-)

Two of these had already been addressed in the novels. I imagine the G’Kar/Lyta story will tie in to the Telepath War, which JMS is saving for later. (Or maybe it’s the new deal he’s talking about.)

Yes, Bester/Geribaldi was resolved in the novels; though IIRC, they left out the Lyta aspect and the Lyta/Geribaldi deal. Or rather they reduced it a single mentioning of Lyta’s death in an assassination attempt (sorry for the spoiler). I think that the adventures of Lyta and G’kar, ostensibly meant to also be a spiritual journey, might be interesting. Aw heck, I just want to see more Lyta ;-)

  5. Thoughts
Legend of the Rangers was a decent flick that showed promise. Was it seasons 4 5 or 6 of B5? no. Was it Star Trek: Enterprise suckage quality? heck no

That being said I’m always up for anything JMS will put out. So far, I’ve not been overly disappointed with anything he does. jerimiah was really cool and has had me pinned to the TV with the most recent developments, but last I saw he was pulled out after the end of Season 2 so things could go south quick.

After the current lack of decent sci-fi programming (I don’t count Smallville as full Sci-Fi, i’m referring to the ‘trek’ offering and the lack of Farscape/Firefly now) i’m all for something new.

Except for Children of Dune and the upcoming Battlestar I’ve not watched Sci-Fi since it pulled farscape. They might get a viewer back if they do something decent with B5 and don’t kill it.

Wait, there was a sixth season of B5? I haven’t seen it. Where can I see it at?

Unless you count Crusades as season 6, there is none.
