Charmed is pre-empted tonight, but it’s being
pre-empted by a classic fantasy film that we might as well make
room to talk about, anyway. The Wizard of Oz airs
on the WB tonight at 7/6c. Check local listings.

Funny, I heard about that just las week…is this a new thing or am I not
up to date on stoner culture?

I first heard of it about five years ago, and the vast majority of
the stoner culture I’m familiar with is the View Askew stuff. Since
it was noticed with the record, I’d say it’s pretty old news.
There was a movie station that I don’t get which aired the movie
with the Pink Floyd album as the soundtrack instead of the
original soundtrack just last year. I wish I could have seen it. I
want to hear how well they match up, but I don’t know where to
find the record, and the record players still out there are too
expensive to buy just for this. I’d have to pick up The
Wizard of Oz, too.
Re: Okay
Complete instructions appear here. and one of several online articles here. No one really knows who first discovered the synch, but it has been discussed since the 1970s. However, the CD era made this a good deal easier.
A lesser-known and far less-impressive but still very bizarre synch-up exists between the “Black Mass” sequence of Witchcraft through the Ages and the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ “Zoot Suit Riot,” which (so far as I know) I first discovered. Somehow, this fact never impresses anyone.

Hmmm, I need free time (holiday break coming, that’ll be wellcomed),
the Wizard of Oz DVD (rental), the Pink Floyd CD and stoners (those last
two items should come in one package: find stoners and you’ll find a
pink floyd collection nearby).
The only question is, do we keep watching the movie with the sound on
after the CD stops or do we just quit then?

I did this with some friends 5-6 years ago and the site we got instructions from said you could do one of two things. Either repeat DSOTM and you’d get another handful of synchronicities, or play two other Floyd CDs (sorry, forget which ones but I think one was Animals) and again you’d get a small number of strange matches.
Really, though, you get the most out of the first play of DSOTM. But you can try googling “dark side of the rainbow” and you might find more.

Tried it myself and this site has several suggestions.

Nick Mason
Nick Mason, drummer for Pink Floyd, gave an interview on this phenomenon several years ago. He claimed that the synchronicities were entirely unintentional, and that the band was actually trying to synch parts of the album with “The Sound of Music.”
Funny little tidbit, there. (Entirely tounge-in-cheek, I might add)

Right. Next thing, you’ll be telling us that Led Zep didn’t intend the music for “Stairway to Heaven” to synch with the Gilligan’s Island theme music…. )
