Whatever happened to Tru?

Daemonik
writes, I was looking in the archives an noticed
that there hasn’t been a discussion about Tru Calling
since mid-November.

Did everyone collectively walk away from the show or
has it just been under the radar? FOX seems to still
be airing new episodes, so is there any interest in
talking about it?
I stopped posting discussion
forums because it’s a pain to figure out which
episode is up next from Fox’s site. If you’re still
willing to discuss it, we’re willing to host it.

  1. Watched it Last Night
errr… Actually, that’s the night before last, now… I need to get to bed. Anyway, Thursday night’s show was pretty good. Tru and her morgue friend were both shot, and so she was basically saving herself, with a few others thrown in for good measure. She obviously is still learning the ropes with this thing, though. One of the most common rules: “Don’t tell anybody.” Breaking that one just gets you in trouble. I’m almost surprised she hasn’t tried to pull the lottery numbers, yet.

Who has time, what with all the life-saving? I suspect the implied baggage of this kind of miraculous Gift is that if you abuse it (i.e. try to help yourself in any way at all instead of just running around looking like a complete loon all the time), there are Terrible Consequences.

I wonder how long it will take her morgue friend to tell her he knew her
mom and that she saved people too. They’ve been hinting at it a lot…

  2. Pretty good
This week’s episode was decent enough. Basically, Tru has to save HERSELF, and her boss/coworker or whatever he is (I haven’t watched too many episodes). The ep was suspenseful and it wasn’t obvious at all what was going to happen. The acting is solid, maybe not Golden Globe quality but believable. Tru/Eliza is hot and her fuzzy-faced colleague is easy to identify with if you’re of a slightly nerdy bent (which is clearly what they intended).

“Tru Calling” is a hell of a lot better than a lot of stuff on TV, I’d say it’s better than “Crossing Jordan” (another protagonist-named show with dead people) and that’s been on for a couple of seasons.

  3. Following …
As a person who grew up with American TV but now lives in Europe without easy access to the US networks it’s fun to have to follow along via episode downloads over the net … the first time I saw Tru Calling I wasn’t sure what my reaction would be … but since the first posted episode 1×02 I have been faithfully downloading it and watching …

So far I have been intrigued by the players, though at times I can tell you what will happen due to typical plot gimmicks … Luke was a giveaway when he first appeared with the “spcinach in the teeth” thing …

Tru’s coworker who gets in on her secret is the best character in my opinion … a typical blend of geekiness with empathy I think many Type-B personalities can relate to …

Eliza Dusku does a good job in her role as protagonist … she doesn’t have the attitude her Faith character had in Buffy but she still has the confidence to follow her instincts …

In the end it is my belief that Luke is a sleeper character and will eventually be brought more into the picture of the whole “I help dead people” thing, partly to complicate the knowing parties and also to give Tru a respite from the relationship pitfalls … I will be looking forward to following it … here’s hoping for a season 2 …

  4. because it sucks

Seriously. From the sound of it at the beginning of the season, I
knew this show would suck. And I knew that Fox would cancel it. I’m just
waiting on that last bit, but I finally confirmed the former suspicion when
I watched an episode a month or so back.

In the ep I saw, Tru has to prevent the death of her ex. Okay, so far,
so good. But the episode takes a big wrong turn when Tru becomes
convinced that she herself is the killer and she is afraid she won’t be
able to stop herself from killing him!
    She actually finds more and
more evidence that she killed the guy and is convinced that she won’t be
able to stop herself! Gee, Tru, how about just not plunging that big ol’
knife into his chest when the situation comes up?!?? Or even better, don’t
invite the guy to your party, where you know he will get killed?

Not even Eliza Dushku’s hotness can save this crapfest…

don’t invite the guy to your party, where you know he will get killed?

      He showed up uninvited.

        He showed up uninvited.

IIRC, she invited him the second time through.

she is afraid she won’t be
able to stop herself from killing him!

In a previous episode she was unable to prevent the death of someone she was trying to save. For that matter, she’s afraid she’ll be unable to prevent each tragedy in every episode. Based on a number of things that have been revealed about Tru’s character though, I think that the fear of failure is one of her biggest issues.

In the first couple of episodes they spent a bit of time explaining the helplessness she felt when her mother died. She also feels helpless about her sister’s drug habit and her brother’s gambling addiction. She wants to help but can’t seem to get to them. Then she loses one of her wards.

She’s not infallible and she knows it. She knows how she feels about her ex and, whether premeditated or by complete accident, everything she sees as she relives the day seems to point to her.

I’m not saying that that particualr episode was great necessarily, but I think that the writing was consistent with the way that Tru’s character has developed.

  5. Harrison/Meredith
I was just thinking about Tru’s relationships with Harrison and Meredith, and how much time has been spent on them in the show. Up til now she seems to have been getting through to Harrison with regards to his gambling and debts, and to his understanding and belief in Tru’s gift. They spent a lot of time showing Tru’s inability to get through to Meredith about her drug habit as well. Two or three times now, Tru has caught Meredith in a lie about drugs.

What I find interesting is that her failure to get through to one and her seeming success at getting through to the other seems to have had a reverse effect at the end of this episode.

Harrison, now a believer, tells someone, to whom he owes gobs of money, to basically bugger off because he knows Tru will always be there for him and walks away feeling invincible. Meredith on the other hand, goes through with her “meeting” anyway, even efter Tru steals her car to prevent her accident and the drug deal that never was, and gets beat up by the dealer. This was a wake up call for her and she calls Tru for help sounding very sincere.

I hope they explore this kind-of-reversal in further episodes because I think it has the potential for some interesting issues for Tru.
