Charmed Discussion – “The Legend of Sleepy Halliwell”

For the first time in weeks, I’m actually able to
come up with jokes related to the episode. However,
as we’re a family friendly site, I can’t actually use
them.

  1. A new watcher here…
I’ve gotten hooked on this from my step kids watching this, and watching the reruns every weekday. It’s a fun watch, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and I find myself really liking the characters. And tonight’s episode…

It felt like a cheap Harry Potter, down to the conjurer who had a passing resemblence. It’s a little too convenient that the Power of 3’s issues got fixed to a point, but then, crises sometimes do that. And of course, we finally put to rest that Chris is Wyatt’s younger brother, which ‘splains lots!

Overall, I’m just taken by how fast this show has grabbed my attention. Usually it takes something like a B5, S:AAB, FarScape or SG-1 to grab me this bad.

agreed, unlike most scifi it has a much lighter less serious feel, as you said doenst take itself too seriously.

one thing that didnt make sense was when the 3 sisters were headless, wouldn’t paige have been able to orb? from what i can tell its mostly a mental thing that doesnt require an ‘action’ like piper with the hands.

also looking forward i hope leo and piper get back together, to permanently split was not the kind of thing their characters would do, and now that leos out of valhalla he hangs around almost as much as before, which is again out of character as ‘king elder’. I hope they get back together…

  2. Crap For Continunity
I love this show and watch it every week, but I’m getting a little tired of them pulling rabbits out of hats. Magic School? What kind of Harry Potter ripoff is that? So the Charmed Ones have a book to pass down magic from generation to generation. Now they have a school. Even better, they apparently attended the school without remembering.

Also, I’m still trying to figure out the deal with the wolf lady. Some kind of wierd plot contrivance to explain away one of the actors missing the real shoot? Subtle threat of being written out of the show ala Threes Company?

Yeah, Harry Potter was the first thing I thought of, but I think it’s an homage, much like the title play they like, e.g. “sleepy halliwell”. I did get the impression the school was a relatively new thing — I don’t think it existed when the charmed ones were little. I can’t see Piper sending Wyatt to a real school though — the first time he gets scared and throws up a shield all halliwell will break loose. And teachers that can’t cope with a conjured horseman in a magic school don’t have any business there. This *was* a weak episode, just an excuse to give Phoebe a vision to tell her who Chris is, thought the shaman and wolf stuff *is* a standard sort of native american mystic sort of thing. The show does seem to try to incorporate just about all mythology ever written…

yeah i was thinking the same thing, he orbed out of the daycare place, in full view… he either gets bound (which would be difficult as paige/phoebe dont want to help) or goes to some kind of magical school…

another thing i just thought of, perhaps the normal childhood/magic school choice will be one of those ‘big choices’ that influences if he goes evil or not, similar to Phoebe marry/not marrying Cole (4×13, The Three Faces of Phoebe). Dunno, just a thought that popped into my head

Trying to give him a “normal” childhood is just wrong. It’s telling him to suppress who he is around other people, instead of reveling in it, like she’s trying to keep her son in the closet – he’s here, he’s magical, get used to it.
