Premise

Cal is recruiting people to face off against S.H.I.E.L.D., including Angar the Screamer and Karla Faye Gideon.

High Point

The conversation in the kitchen.

Low Point

I was originally going to reference the moment when Cal had a coffee, but we hadn’t seen him order coffee as black as midnight on a moonless night, but then we had the Deus Ex Machina end to this chapter of Cal’s threat.

The Review

The secret revealed this week is definitely pushing the show in an original and unexpected direction. 5 out of 6.

The effects were well done again, both with Skye’s abilities and with Angar the Screamer. I give it 5 out of 6.

The structure of the story is again bang on. The writers’ room on this show must have insane lead time to keep everything working together this well. I give it 5 out of 6.

The acting is excellent, from old cast and new. MacLachlan is really starting to shine here. I give it 6 out of 6.

The production is what we’ve come to expect from Mutant Enemy. 6 out of 6.

The emotional response was powerful again. I give it 5 out of 6.

Overall, this is another strong episode in a strong season of television. I give it 5 out of 6.

In total, One Of Us receives 37 out of 42.

  1. I thought the entire final confrontation was disappointing, although the reveal of the damage Skye was doing to herself was interesting. I’m definitely curious about the “real” SHIELD and what that might mean, but I’m still frustrated with the direction they’re taking Simmons (although at least they had a Fitz-Simmons moment by the end – I really miss those).

    • I personally like where they are taking Simmons. The lover interest and all has been done to death. I want to see angst, I want to see anger, I want revenge for her feeling betrayed. And now Colson has given her carte blanche to do it. I think this will ultimately bring about a better story line than just another love story. Don’t best friends make great enemies? I can only imagine if done right that a former lover interest will be even better (worse).

      • My issue isn’t that I want them to be lovers but they make a great team when they are working together. I’m not sure how they’d work as enemies.

The Woebegone Will of Whedon (akin to the Fickle Finger of Fate) tends to favor breaking up and shaking up relationships so I’m guessing that will be the path it takes.

I’m intrigued by the twists and eager to see where it’s going, and if we’re this ramped up already I have no idea what effect Age of Ultron will have on the show.

        • I assume it will be much like the winter soldier. They will start intertwining the plots and lead it up to Ultron, regardless of how they lead up to it, I am really excited to see the aftermath.

    • I’m usually good at it, but I was copy and pasting it this time and one typo multiplied.

Ah well if someone didn’t want spoilers they wouldn’t be reading an episode review, eh? :P
