  1. Stinks To Higher Plane
This is just a damn shame. Despite the occasional clunker, Angel has been a great show. The combination of heavy drama and solid comedy has been a pleasure to watch. To me personally, this decision doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, since it’s one of only two shows I watch on WB (the other one is obvious) and, unless something new and different pops up next season, I’ll be down to just one hour of WB viewing per week. That’s still an hour more than I watch Fox, but I’m an avid TV fan so one would think there would be more.

Still in all, I’m glad that WB had the decency – and the INTELLIGENCE – to make this decision long before the end of the season. Too many shows get dumped suddenly with no sense of resolution and Mutant Enemy at least has a chance to give us a solid finale.

I don’t keep good track of things like this (except what I see on B42), but does anyone else know if there’s anything on the Mutant Enemy back burner in terms of another television show? Or are they still a little too wounded from Firefly to consider such a thing?

Ideas for another Buffy-verse spin-off are available, but
I’m unaware of any active plans to put them out there.
The Firefly movie is still the primary drive for
new material. Joss himself is rumoured to be launching an
Astonishing X-Men title for Marvel Comics this
May. If that’s true, we’ll probably know when the May
solicitations hit on Wednesday. May will be a major
shakedown for the X-books to matter what, so I’ll try to
keep us all up to date.

There’s Ripper, which was proposed a couple of years ago.

  2. Well, I suppose it could be worse…
If less notice had been given, they wouldn’t even have a chance to wrap it up
in a moderately satisfactory manner. I’d have preferred if they’d said ‘next
season will be the last’ because then they could really have finished it off in
style (as they did with Buffy).

They’ve still got a chance to do it. Keep in mind that there was talk of cancelling Angel before this season started, so I’m sure there’s a contingency plan that leads to a “big finish” as opposed to a “big cliffhanger.”

…but… but… The series must end with The Apocalypse! You know, the one where Angel is supposed to play a major part.

Let us hope their last-episode budget is sufficient for a very nice Apocalypse.

Like they say on TNT, drama is when you just don’t know.

I wonder if the price for the prize (becomming human) will be the same as in
Asimov’s Bicentenial Man (ignore the movie, read the novel).

Yeah, but that would kind of wreck their plans to make a TV special later on. Well, unless he comes back as a ghost (hey, it worked for Spike, and he was already dead before he got killed).

  3. expected

I kinda get the feeling that Joss et al. expected this and that’s why
they’re bringing out the Shanshu gun this season.

This is sad news, but honestly this season has been dull and lifeless
compared to the tour de force of last season. Still, I would have
liked at least one more season.

But thank god, no more Spike! Yay for small favors!

IIRC, Joss had said earlier that it didn’t look like any Buffy cameos
(apart from Andrew) would happen but that if the show got cancelled
    SMG
might show up. So I wonder if she will? I think there’d be a nice
symmetry if Angel appeared on Buffy‘s last ep and Buffy appears
    on Angel‘s.

  4. Joss’s reaction.
    From the BronzeBeta forum:

Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a
good time to weigh in. to answer some obvious questions: No, we had no
idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don’t think the
WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I’m grateful they did it early enough for my
    people to find other jobs.

    Yes, my heart is breaking.

When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got
the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie.
But Angel… we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our
stride — and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes ‘n’ Lava. I’m so into
these characters, these actors, the situations we’re building… you wanna
know how I feel? Watch the first act of “The Body.”

As far as TV movies or whatever, I’m not thinking that far ahead. I actually
hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season
finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a
great platform for a new season, of course.) We’ll proceed ahead as planned.

I’ve never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn’t about
surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I’ve been
lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I
have. I don’t FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am.

Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane
devotion. It’s meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley
murders in the 80’s — what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the
    poet:

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they
CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN’ SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all
    those people on it. Damn.”

    See you soon.

Here’s one hoping he doesn’t take that road. We’re dying for some quality shows out here, and I can’t wait for his next one…

  5. ‘Faith’ doesn’t want to do ‘Faith’
I read in a magazine a while ago that Eliza Dushku passed up the opportunity to do “Faith” (or whatever they’d call it) to make ‘Tru Calling‘, something about her going back in time to help dead people. So that’s not happening.

  6. Great, now what the hell am I gonna watch on Wednesday
No Jake 2.0, No Enterprise, No Angel…. Everyone we better start a save smallville petition before they even get the idea in they’re heads….

Joss Whedon just signed a 12 issue committment on
Astonishing X-Men, launching the title in May.
That’ll cover one Wednesday each month, at any rate.

Isn’t he contracted with Fox to do one more project?

I can see it now, This may on FOX: The astonishing X-men featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Jean Grey, David Boreanez as Wolverine, and James Masters as (ironically) Angel

It’s in danger, but nothing’s official yet. It sounds to
me like there was an uptrend this season, but it didn’t
start until after Smallville started with new
episodes, so I stopped watching Enterprise. I
doubt I’m the only one who has done this, which means that
the timing of the new directions were off on their end,
and the viewers they hoped to hang onto had already left.

  7. Will Angel be moving to different network?
Is there any information on maybe Angel being moved to a different netwrok, like BTVS moving from WB to UPN? Has there been any word on UPN maybe helping us out again?

Nothing official or final, no, but rumour has it that
      talks are underway.
