Timeline of SciFi movies

Anonymous Coward writes, Hi there! I came up with the idea to put sci-fi movies in a chronological order. The problem is that there are many movies that don’t really refer to a specific point in time whereas others mention a concrete date. I’ve tried to put those that show a certain specified time in my list here. You’re welcome to contribute more to that list by either filling out the form on that page mentioned above or write an email to [email protected]! Thanks! Hannes

A serious timeline of SF films? Why not….

where did you get the date on Dune?

It’s in the opening narration in one of the episodes of the miniseries.

      • Re: question

“A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then that it is the year 10191. The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, my father.” … middle part that I always forget … “Oh yes, I forgot to tell you: the spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe, a desolate and dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy, that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom. The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune.”

Man, I used to love listening to the Dune soundtrack; it was the best thing about that crappy movie. Well, that and Virginia Madsen…

        • Re: question

Oops, that’s from the movie; lost mentioned the miniseries. Sorry.

But it is mentioned in the movie too, obviously.

        • Re: question
Middle part= “In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice melange. The spice extends life, the spice expands consciousness, the spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated over four thousand years, use the orange spice gas which gives them the ability to fold space. That is travel to any part of the universe without moving.”

I listen to the soundtrack all the time.

From this we can deduce that people get to Arrakis before the year 10191-4000=6191. If we assume that FTL travel was not possible before that time, this gives us a sphere of space, centered on Earth, in which Arrakis exists.

Now if he could somehow reconcile it with this, that’d be
      sweet. :)

He places the fall of Atlantis after the life of Conan…that’s not right.

Right. But I got the part about Elmer Fudd defeating Cthulhu correct, didn’t I? : )

Many possible dates exist for the fall of Atlantis, depending on whose timeline you’ve been reading. Where conflicts exist, I take the most scientific and rational course of action, and either select one or reject them all and make shit up.

        • Re: Crossover Timeline…

Regarding Dune, there are widely-used concordances between the calendar used in the novel and ours, based on the characters’ understanding of our history, the era of “Emperor Hitler,” the first atomic bomb, the moving of the world capitol to Washington, et cetera. I stand by my dates for the events in the Dune saga.

          • Re: Crossover Timeline…

            • 11 313: Reawakened Gandalf briefly encounters Bene Gesserit “witches.”
            • 11 315: Gandalf puts self in stasis, heads to distant galaxies.
            • 33 000: Gandalf returns to this portion of the universe.

            Huh?

            • Re: Crossover Timeline…

              Huh?

Without the broader context of the Timeline, which is obviously a joke, the Gandalf references don’t really make sense. But the years into which I placed the Dune saga fit Herbert.

Yeah…. So, excellent timeline of SF movies that guy made, huh?

After two Years With A Giant Coven Of Witches, I’d Probably Be So Worn Out For Some Time In Stasis, Too. That Lucky Stiff…

So according to those, what year of our calander is their year 0?

              • Re: Crossover Timeline…

The dates used in the Dune Encyclopedia appear online here.

All well and good, except that while Herbert read and let the Dune Encyclopedia be published, it is non-canon. The first prequels that have been put out have already started to shred it as a credible source.

                • Re: Crossover Timeline…

If we regard the prequels as “canon.” I haven’t read them, and not everyone finds them worthwhile additions. In the end, my Timeline is a joke, so I’ll likely not change those dates, at least any time soon.

Yes, but the Hyborian age specifically takes place some time between the
fall of atlantis and the rise of the current historical civilisations.

Its not as much a question of when you place the fall of Atlantis, but the fact
that Conan lived after that. Also, I stopped reading after you omitted the
1903 War of The Worlds, so I can’t say for the Elmer Fudd reference : )

          • Re: Crossover Timeline…

See, Conan had to be in the distant past, and there was a really good reason for the date I picked for Atlantis, and I can no longer recall what it was…. As soon as I remember and assess the situation, I may have to change history. Then again, maybe I won’t….

  1. Startrek-first contact, time machine.
This move takes place in TWO timelines.
So you need to list it in 2061 as well.

Also the original time machine move had WWIII in 1964 or 1969 I think.

Time Machine is listed in two years: 2030 and 2037. If you have some proof on your statement on WWIII in Time Machine I will post it.

And about Star Trek: is there any reliable source for all of these dates?

Star Trek Chronology, book by Michael and Denise Okuda.

The 2061 data for first contact (Zephrin Cocrin’s first warp flight) is listed on the timeline at one of the startrek web sites. As for the Time Machine data for WWIII, I was refering to the George Pal movie. I don’t have that one on dvd or laser disk, but IIRC the date on his machine was in the ’60s when he landed the first time and the bombs started dropping. Maybe someone who has the DVD can check up on this.

Hey you should also list the date 1885, from Back to the Future part III!
Also anybody remember ‘the fabulous world of Jules Verne’?
        When did that take place?

  2. Time Machine
I think the date for the far future year which the time traveller went to is wrong. Should be 802,701.
