Hrm… I was a bit surprised by the sweep.
Personally, I was much more interested in seeing Lost in Translation win for Director and Picture, because that movie stuck with me, and its images echoed in my mind, far longer that did the images in RotK.
Moreover, after The Two Towers, I was severely disappointed in the whole LotR franchise — even though I saw FotR 6 times (or was it 7?) in the theaters, and loved it. My opinion on these movies is that after Fellowship, only the extended DVDs are worth watching, and they are just too damn long.
But I guess a lot of people don’t agree with me.

For that matter Sea Biscuit was a good film, especially after its somewhat confusing opening. But the Oscars are as much about politics and balancing, say, popular with critically acclaimed, and LotR was passed over twice, so now it has its turn.
At least it signals that fantasy can be taken seriously by the Academy.

I’m thinking the awards were not necessarily a nod to RotK by itself, but more to the rest of the franchise. How many times did the voiceover guy mention “This is so-and-so’s first Oscar. They were nominated last year for The Two Towers.”? I think I heard that more often than not, which leads me more to the 3-movies-as-a-whole.

This was definitely a “recognition of the trilogy” type thing by the Acadamy, but I still think it shows the strength of ROTK as a movie of it’s own that it was able to sweep all 11 awards. You wouldn’t have seen this had ROTK not been an excellent movie.
I don’t really follow the Oscars that closely, but what did suprise me was that ROTK wasn’t even nominated for cinematography? That would have seemed like a no-brainer for this kind of film.

It has been suggested that there was too much CGI in it for the cinematographers to really consider it cinematography.

Well it was featuring Billy Crystal, and it was fantastic. He basically bumbles around in all the movies of the year (last year) including ROTK, and Jack Nicholson is Gandalf who picks up little Billy on his horse and rides to the white tower at the Oscars. Pity i didn’t record it.

Eh, you can’t be serious. Sir Ian McKellen was nominated for best supporting actor in FOTR, if you recall. Sean Astin’s performance in ROTK was very moving too. The rest of the cast also does a commendable job.
