Well, I really liked the meteor destruction scene. Gives a nice apocalyptic
touch to the Superman origin story, and its really nicely done.

Though I didn’t watch tonight, I must say that this scene is what convinced me to start watching (saw it on “EasyVue,” the Sunday reruns). Though I question the logic (rocks arrive at same time as baby in rocketship and were heading in the same direction?), the production values were great and it was an entertaining twist on what has become a classic tale (try to find anyone who’s been a kid since WWII who doesn’t know Superman’s origin).
I do wish, though, they would give a little extra rerun love to Angel before it goes away (and I wish I wouldn’t be so lazy, using this many parentheses). :)

I think I understand the question. Everything heading in the same direction I think was suppose to hint at the destruction of Krypton. The debris, as well as the spaceship, all came at about the same time. It’s quite a long way to travel though.
I loved seeing 1961. I missed it the first time around. It was an excellent episode. I have the Pilot on the Season 1 DVD set, and I prefer that uncut version better. When the football players who strung up Clark leave the dance to see their pickups all stacked on top of each other, that’s a classic moment. But that, as well as some other minor scenes I think, have been cut everytime the pilot has been on since the original air date (it makes it too long to fit into a normal hour.) I still love the show though. Reruns are just as entertaining as they were when I first watched them. Pete and Chloe looked so young in the pilot though.

After seeing the new twist on Jor-El and his saying that Kal-El’s destiny is to rule through strength, it also struck me that the meteor shower might have served as cover–the ship would be just another object in the sky amid general chaos. Any destruction would have been fully justified as protecting Kal-El.
Of course, Jor-El wouldn’t have sent Kryptonite deliberately, but it’s possible that in a new canon, he just knew that Krypton was going to blow up, not that it would create Krytponite, or that Kryptonite is deadly only under Earth conditions.
Of course, this doesn’t take into account Lara’s message asking whoever finds Clark to protect him, with a very different tone. It’ll be interesting to see if that ever gets explored, whether she’s the one who intended for him to be benevolent and not interfere with Earth’s natural developments, or whether that was a deliberate ploy, to appeal to his finders’ emotions. In canon, she was very much against sending him to Earth because it is such a barbaric, backwards planet.
