Game Over Discussion

  1. I remember…
…when this show was first on. It had better animation, wittier writing and was called “Reboot.” Rather than embracing the Video Game culture it’s supposed to appeal to, this show is just another formulaic sitcom. Warburton isn’t even funny and that’s a challenge.

  2. Didn’t watch it
But from what I saw on the trailers, there wasn’t anything about this show that I was even remotely interested in. I mean seriously, how long can “Mom’s doing something really ordinary in a really dangerous way wow isn’t that ironic?”, “Dad’s driving the family minivan like he does in a race”, and “Look at my wacky neighor doing something wacky with Ninja’s” jokes last?

  3. Didn’t even bother

If anyone ever needed evidence that the networks are creatively bankrupt, Game Over would be one of the most compelling exhibits, right up there with the proliferation of reality shows and anything starring the Olsen twins.

I couldn’t even stomach the commercials, let alone try the actual show.

    Blech.

  4. Well, I *ACTUALLY WATCHED IT*…
…and I can say that there were parts that were really funny. It had the typical “first show” problems with coming up with a believable reason for all the characters to be together (chiefly blowing up a [neo]pet store for the family angry cat/dog/thing), but the main source of all the humor was incredibly funny “cameos” by stars of various games.

The credits/intro has the youngish teenage daughter picketing a beach volleyball match that looks rather like DoA’s, with a sign that says “THONG = WRONG”. Her “activism” includes protesting her mother’s Lara Croft-esque Tomb Raiding, which is rather amusing.

Characters like Abe from Abe’s Oddessy show up in the nuclear waste/junkyard, which bears the name of a Superfund site (funny if you get it). At one point in the mall, Dad is decked by a guy who looks suspiciously like Tommy Vercetti.

Plus, Dad is voiced by the same guy who plays Joe/the Next Door Neighbor from Family Guy.

Was it a perfect episode? By no means. But it certainly had some funny moments, and deserves to be given a chance.

      I don’t think it’ll get that chance…

According to the futon critic, Game Over and The Mullets both tanked hard, in some of the worst ratings UPN has gotten all season.

That’s why all we get is reality shows and stuff staring the Olsen twins. Nothing else gets the ratings to stick around.

          True.

But that doesn’t mean that some low-rated shows don’t deserve cancellation.

(And hell, even the Olsens have been cancelled more than a few times in the past!)
