Premise

Jay Garrick reveals the existence of Earth-Two, and a character named Zoom who wants to destroy all other speedsters. Meanwhile, the week’s evil metahuman invites two Flashes to play in his sandbox, and a rookie courts Joe West for a place on his task force.

High Points

This week gave us great moments in design and style. The other Earth’s Retrofuturistic look makes it an interesting take on Earth Two, and Jay has a great costume, even if he’s (temporarily, one suspects) lost his powers.

When I complained about Iris, my wife said, “she’s got a great jacket.”

The villain meets a smashing end.

Low Points

At present, Iris has little more to do save play cheerleader for Team Flash, and Candice Patton lacks the chemistry with Grant Gustin to make even that work effectively.

As the parent grows more unabashedly comic-book, Flash appears (judging from the ending scenes) to be taking on more soap-arrow. I’m not certain I like this movement.

The Scores:

Originality: 3/6 The show paid homage to its source material and history, but did not simply duplicate these.

Effects: 5/6

Acting: 4/6

Story: 4/6 The story feels choppy and a bit rushed, particularly in handling the relationship between the two Flashes….

Emotional Response: 4/6 …but it opens up some interesting possibilities for the series.

Production: 5/6

Overall: 5/6 Conceptually this week brought a strong episode, but the execution needed work.

In total, “The Flash of Two Worlds” receives 30/42

Lingering Questions

We know that Jay Garrick will get his speed back. When will it happen? Any bets?

Do get to ask why an Earth with so different a history would produce lots of duplicate individuals, or…?

  1. Did anyone else catch Garrick saying he can go “almost the speed of light”? And that Zoom is faster than him?

Also… so the Big Bad in this season is another speedster. Again.

  2. Admittedly, I am not all that familiar wit the source material here, but it felt like half the episode was setting up things for Legends of Tomorrow.
