Comments Blaine: Note that the product descriptions for all 9 seasons list an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The first four seasons were filmed in standard definition resolution at 4:3, so they’d have been upconverted and cropped. Season 5 was where HD filming began, but the shots were still composed for the 4:3 broadcast, leading to issues like characters speaking “off screen” when they are visible and not speaking on screen, or a prop guy’s hand visibly slipping a stake into the pile in “Bad Blood.” Season 6 was the first season composed specifically for 16:9 in high definition.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I’d recommend going with either Big Hero 6, or Ant-Man (though I’m waiting for a more involved release of Ant-Man).” Blaine says, “I’d go with Ant-Man and/or The X-Files on Blu-Ray. If you get The X-Files a season at a time, season 8 is the best of the seasons intended for 16:9 high definition in the first place.”

One reply

  1. Ant-Man and Minions are already on their way to me, I’d love that X-Files box set but I can’t justify the price especially when the whole series is on Netflix.
