Hellboy Discussion

writes, It seemds a little odd that we had an
April fools joke about Hellboy but nobody submitted
any articles yet. I know hard core comic fans are
going to have responses ranging from dissapointment
to absolute rage, but there has been nothing.

It doesn’t look like any of us have seen this yet.
(Or, if they did, I didn’t see the response via
e-mail.) So, here’s a discussion forum.

  1. This is downright depressing…
I finailly work up the guts to submit something… and this is what I get…
Doesn’t anybody think this movie is worthty of comment?
Then I’ll ask a question, whats the name of dude with the mask and the wind-up-clock in his chest?

Heh. I commented on the film back in the joke article.

That’d be Kroenen. I did like the scene where he was working at a bench and they scanned over the other masks on the bench, one of which was dead-on to the one he wears in the Hellboy books.

I just saw it last night. (Hey, mom always said I was slow.)

It doesn’t work as an adaptation of the comic book but it works very well as “inspired by” the book. The scenes are all driving towards the action moments, very different from the original, for example.

I really liked the way that they used distinctive color palettes, not just for mood, but to convey senses of space and motion. It didn’t always work but it was effective when it did.

  2. non-comic geek opinion
I thought it was a fun movie. Please don’t confuse that term with good movie though. I felt that although they had a good crew of actors, the acting was thin. At best. I saw Rasputin and said to myself what is Cipher doing in this movie. But regardless there was enough fun parts to it where I enjoyed the small experience.

Definitely wouldn’t own. Shoulda rented. But not that bad.

  3. I’ll repeat what I said in othe post

It was an okay movie, and usually enjoyable. I think it suffered most from its deviations from the original “Seed of Destruction” story — it would have been less blockbuster-ish, but I think the story might have hung together better and held more of Hellboy’s usual pulp horror feel. There were characters in the film who were almost totally unused, to the point that they could quite effectively been left out. The romantic subplot left me kind of cold, too.

It was nice to seen more of Bruttenholm, though, and there were aspects of the movie’s version of Kroenen that struck me as interesting, in that they helped fill out a character who didn’t get much background in the comics. Perlman was an excellent choice for the title character, and the work done on the Abe Sapien character was also very, very good — I’ve heard that some of Abe’s facial animation was done with CGI, but it looked natural enough I never noticed, and I didn’t notice that there were actually two actors involved (one doing tho voice, and another doing the physical acting) until I started checking credits.
