Thunderbirds are go!

Daemonik writes, For those who remember the Tracy family, Tin-Tin and Lady Penelope with fondness there is a live action Thunderbirds movie coming out this summer.

For those who have no idea, the Thunderbirds was a 60’s children’s tv show created by Gerry Anderson. Rather than resorting to animation, Thunderbirds was defined by its use of Supermarionation (puppets) and models to depict the adventures of International Rescue in the year 2065. Google as always can help you find out more.

From the trailer, the movie looks to be a fairly faithful translation with live actors substituted for the puppets. However, the big question of course is will the 60’s retro sets and optimistic futurism go over with todays CGI saturated audiences? Will anyone other than ‘geeks’ get it or is Hollywood making another travesty out of our childhood?

  1. I’m going to cross my fingers and hope
Hope, of course, doesn’t necessarily get you anywhere. The proof of the pudding will as usual be in the eating – but I think I’ll go and see it unless the reviews are really, really, really bad.

Okay now I’ve seen the trailer and I’m liking it.

  2. I’m more likely to watch this then the original
Something about those puppets spook me out. But orbitz commercials are getting my more used to it.

Be glad you didn’t watch ‘Captain Scarlet’. Made by the same people as Thunderbirds, with the same creepy strings and hinged jaws, the main character, Captain Scarlet was unkillable, and would return from the dead every episode!

But he did have a really cool flying aircraft carrier with three white fighter jets along with three ‘babe’ pilots.

Ah, a simpler time. And don’t get me started on Marina…

        WE ARE THE MYSTERONS!

Captain Scarlet had normal human proportions, unlike the Thunderbirds, with
        their giat heads…

Man, that guy was a genious with puppets and especially custom miniatures,
but he couldn’t write a coherent story if his life depended on it. I’m surprised
and delighted that they kept the exact same design for the ships,
and even the launch sequence. The story seems to be a spy kids rip-off, but it
can only be an improvement on the originals.

Thank God, I’m not the only one. Those things are unnatural!
