Smallville Discussion – “Memoria” (new)

The end of the third season is drawing to a close.
They’ve lost a huge chunk of the audience the season
started with, too. (Down to 4.5 million from 7
million.)

  1. That is one messed up family
Well, to anyone who dismisses this show as a teeny boper, I give you the very
disturbing origin of a super villain.

    Post-partem depression and all.

They did a bang-up job continuing to trick us into believing that Lex killed his little brother. Every time I thought “Of course, his mother did it,” they managed to insert doubt up until the end. Wondering if Lex was going to reveal knowledge of his missing time, Lionel’s parental murders or the truth of Julian’s death was entertaining as well. I enjoy it when genres (murder mystery and sci-fi/comic) come together well.

It’s always a good episode with the Kents shoved mostly to the side in favor of the Luthors. :)

  2. Kidnapping?
Don’t you think Clark could have Lionel arrested for kidnapping? I suppose he figures he did break in to the lab, so that kind of prevents him from using the kidnapping argument. I don’t think I’ve ever hated Lionel as much as I did last night. He is truly evil. But then again, to see him realizing how bad he screwed up in the end, and then Lex push him away, was very touching. I didn’t know who to feel the worse for. Lionel for realizing how he emotionally abused his son thinking he murdered his brother and almost trying to apologize for it, or Lex for refusing to accept his fathers attempt to apologize.

And I’m SO GLAD they ended the show with Clark hugging his mom, instead of the usual “Clark and Lana look in each others eyes scene”.

I think Clark is still too unsure of himself and scared for his family to try to accuse Lionel overtly of anything like kidnapping. He’s probably sure that Lionel would find a way to wriggle out of it and then would do everything he could to make sure the Kents all end up paying for it. In a way, he and Lionel are both still circling one another, knowing that whoever attacks first might well be at a disadvantage. And Clark can’t quite be sure about Lex’s loyalty or help, either, now that there are already so many rifts in their friendship.

They seem to be setting up very direct parallels between Lionel/Lillian and Jor-El/Lara. Anybody else wonder if it’s just coincidence that the name Lionel can break up into Lion-El?

I think you’re absolutely right about that. Anyone who has tried to stand up to Lionel gets screwed big time. Chloe is the biggest one recently. Clark knows that he has what it takes to take Lionel down. But he knows that Lionel has too many friends in high places and could get out of almost anything. The only way I see it ending is for Lionel to get killed off at some point.

  3. I still can’t believe
that they’re losing the audience. The last two episodes have been superb.

The birthday party scene between young Lex and Lionel in this episode was particularly great, as I couldn’t figure out why Lionel was being so nice until I realized that Julien was still alive at that time.

Babbster, an addendum to your thought that the show is better without the Kents – I think it’s better without Lana.

I’m just glad it wasn’t a freak-of-the-week episode! :) Although there was another “I discovered Clark’s secret, so I either have to die, go into a coma, or lose all memory of what happened” character again, I liked this episode a lot.
