Premise:

An immortal man tries to keep a low profile and keep his flesh-and-bloodlust in check. Then some criminals kidnap the daughter he never knew he had.

High Point:

Henry Rollins as a world weary, dysfunctional immortal is inspired casting.

Low Points

Jack’s adversaries really have very little chance against him. Yes, people connected to him are in real danger, and he must battle his worst demons. There remains the problem, however, of a certain sapping of tension when your protagonist is indestructible and his opponents are doomed.

The Scores:

Originality: 2/6 We’ve encountered metahuman narrtives about indestructible immortals before. In fact, we’ve read and seen more than a few about some of the specific immortals Jack claims to have been. The film most closely resembles certain vampire subgenres, though Jack craves flesh as well as blood. He Never Died does, however, bring its own twists to several genres.

Effects: 4/6 The film features some basic (but well-done) practical effects, and some very odd audio effects.

Acting: 5/6 Rollins is often hilarious as the deadpan and literal-minded monster/action hero. The supporting cast turn in strong performances. Kate Greenhouse remains plausibly bewildered as she gets drawn into Jack’s world, while recent Degrassi alumnus Jordan Todosey gets some mileage from lines like “Vaginas are like coupon books for alcohol.”

Production: 5/6

Story: 4/6 The story is somewhat predictable, and could have done more with these characters. However, if the description of the film sounds like something you’d like, then I can almost guarantee you won’t feel your time was wasted.

Emotional Response: 5/6 The film proves at turns both disturbing and funny without veering too far into either over-the-top bloodfest or outright parody.

Overall: 5/6
