This is so bizarre, it must be true. IGN FilmForce is reporting that actor Hugh Grant is the latest candidate to play the Ninth Doctor in the always-talked-about “Doctor Who” feature film. He may be British, but beyond that I’m a touch skeptical.

Not to begrudge Mr. Grant’s career move, but my own
perception of the Doctor would be negatively affected
if it’s Hugh Grant. People with English accents can be
really annoying, especially ones in romantic comedies.

No, really. There was a (inside parody) special Dr Who in which the doctor goes through about six lives. Rowan Atkinson is one, as is Hugh Grant. Seriously.
Stephen Fry
Ok, as one of the biggest Doctor Who fans on the west coast I have to say Hugh Grant would just RUIN it. Now Stephen Fry (mentioned in the article) would be a good choice. My question though is why not Paul???

Did you actually *see* that ‘movie’ the BBC hyped so
much? I’d rather have McCoy back.

I would also like to see Sylvester McCoy come back into the new series. I liked him a lot, and his character development ended as abruptly as the show in ’89. Paul McGann has a great look for the Doctor–kind of an upadated Romantic poet, Lord Byron sort of thing. But–like Jon Pertwee, McGann can be accused of being all style and no substance. Also, I’m very concerned that the new show be a *direct* continuation of the old one. Bringing McCoy back, if only shortly, would help bridge this fourteen year gap.

plenty of people would be happy enough if they
would just show some old episodes. i, for one,
would gladly pay eight bucks (or whatever the
going rate) to go to a theatre and see two hours
of the old stuff. you know, the rare episodes
that no one thought to record, or stuff that’s old
enough that few people’s tape copies have survived
the test of time.
unfortunately, they’d never go for that, because
everybody always wants to interest new people,
which, in this day and age, means expensive special
effects. i’d be fine with hugh grant, as long as he
has to do battle with salt and pepper shakers built
over tricycles, you know?
why do people take such delight in “remaking” (read
destroying) everything that used to be
a fond memory?
remember what they did to inspector gadget?
