UPN Renews Enterprise

Those nice guys over at TrekToday have the scoop. It’s not official until UPN releases its Fall schedule on Thursday.

One downside, it may be moving to Fridays, not a fun place to be for ratings. At least it won’t have to compete with Smallville.

  1. Good News
Wow! This whole time we’ve been speculating that B&B were planning the last few episodes for expediated ‘closure’, but now we have a whole new season to look forward to. Hip Hip.

  2. Friday mixed blessing
I recognize that Friday is the universal time slot of death. However, I’ve also got to question the previous wisdom of putting it up against Smallville and West Wing. The audience may be smaller on friday, but the competition is also less fierce.

Besides, the big problem with the Friday audience has always been that everyone is out celebrating the end of the week. Well, that shouldn’t be a problem for Star Trek; the target audience doesn’t have anywhere to go ;-)

  3. that timeslot worked ok for X-Files
I seem to recall X-Files ran on friday nights for a few of its seasons, show’s popularity didnt seem to suffer any.

This could work out. X-Files fanbase and Star Trek fanbase tend to overlap.

Now if we could just give B&B the boot… I wonder what JMS is up to.

I do believe he is a tad busy hopefully creating a possible (please don’t kill me Mr JMS for speculating) big screen movie of B5, although I would love to see his take on Star Trek… or how’s about Tarantino?

I’ve heard rumours about JMS being offered something to do with Trek. He refused to comment, so I suspect at the time he may not have made up his mind to say yay or nay. But I’d love to see what he could do with Enterprise. It’s got such potential, it just needs a decent person at the helm!

In rec.arts.comics.marvel.universe, JMS recently said he’s
taking this year off TV to expedite his comic projects,
getting ahead in Supreme Power and Amazing
          Spider-Man
, and working on a new Dr. Strange
miniseries (first issue script submitted) and another new
Marvel project that he hasn’t yet named.

He actually said that his year off started last year, when he finished up with Jeremiah in July. So, he could potentially be available for another series right about now.

Whether he’d even want to take a crack at Trek, though, is another story. Personally, I just don’t think that would be a good combination. Although I could be wrong…

          B5: TMoS

Fans have speculated on the B5 newsgroup about “TMoS” … “The Meaning of Spoo”, or my favorite, “That Mean Ole Straczynski” … News is supposed to be forthcoming.

As for Trek, I don’t think JMS could be called upon to do sci-fi outside of B5 or Jeremiah. :)

  4. Time slots
Where I live, competition with Smallville isn’t a problem, since the WB station here is also the UPN station. Which means that I get to watch Enterprise at 11:00PM. Yeah, I bet the ratings here for Enterprise here are just great! It’s only competition (besides cable) is the local news!

Sci-Fi can thrive on Fridays. The SciFi channel has proven that with Stargate: SG1 (and as far as I’m concerned, Farscape). Of course, with Stargate:SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis starting this summer, on Fridays, the competition will be heating up. The good thing that I see about this is that knowing the SciFi channel, the new episodes of Enterprise will be during reruns of Stargate: *. And the new episodes of Stargate: * will be during reruns of Enterrpise.

SciFi seems to have no sense of sweeps, nor do they have a regular “season” that they program around. They’ve put both Stargate and Farscape in weird positions by declaring a season finale, when actually it’s in the middle of a season, they are just done with the season for this calendar year. And while Stargate is starting in July, that’s when most Farscape seasons came to a true end.

    Go figure.

Tivo is the only thing that makes SciFi series watchable I think, and that just barely — enough so that you don’t miss new episodes. You have to wait for them to come out on DVD to watch them with any sense of continuity.

  5. Wha?!
They end the season with a cliffhanger and it’s not certain they’ll renew it? Geez, I’d hate not to find out if Earth survived the Xinti threat! *sarcasm*
